G.A.S. sucks.....(Marshall VM content)

I'm not one of those people that has constant gas, and even when I do get it, Its normally for strange little things, stomp boxes, speakers, etc...Easily attainable things. Not this time though.

About a week ago I went into GC (i know) to buy some strings. While I was there it started raining, and I didn't really want to run through the rain across two parking lots to my car (I parked infront of an antique store I was in before GC). So I figured I'd just check out some tele's and sg's until the rain stopped.
I was checking out one of those mahogany telecasters, playing through a fender super sonic (which is a really kool amp btw). But then some fat metal kid comes and sets right behind me at the Line 6 spider amps, and starts messing around, So I had to move someplace else. Ya know so I would have to listen to him playing badly with tone worse than his playing.

So I saw the Marshall VM, and decided to check that out, since it was far away from fatty mcmetal-head. I've never really been a fan of any Marshall amps I've tried. I mean, I sorta liked the dsl50's, and when I hear other people playing through the older Marshall's I've always loved they're tone. But I've never really found a Marshall amp that really worked to well for me.
So I plugged into the VM let it warm up, then started messing with the controls. Theres not a bad tone to be found in that amp. It was the 50 watt version with the matching 412 cab with those weird special greenbacks (designed for the jimi Hendrix amps originally I think).

So anyways, its been a over a week now, and I've gone back to GC basically every single day to Play the VM! haha. I've tried basically every guitar in the store though that amp. Schecters, Gibsons, Fenders, jacksons, Squires, Used weird garbage, everything. Guitars I would never even consider owning, guitars I normally HATE, everything.
I keep hoping I'll find something that sound soooooo terrible that it'll make me not love that amp. But no matter what I do, everything sounds amazing through that amp! Its driving me insane. Everything sounds amazing, they all sound different, and ya can still hear the individual character of each guitar, But they still all sound perfect! No matter how terrible the guitar, It sounds perfect through that amp.

So needless to say, I'm pretty sure I'm in love with that amp. Haha. But the thing that sucks is, I could never justify buying it. Not only do I not have the money for it, But I also don't have any real reason to own a half stack.

So yeah, this sucks. I never thought I'd ever play a Marshall that I'd love that much. But the VM just works perfectly for me. What are ya supposed to do when you find an amp that is Perfect for you tone wise. But basically everything else about it is wrong. Way more money than I can justify spending on an amp, way larger than I really need, etc...

Being poor sucks. As much as I love all my current gear, and as much as I've said I'd never sell certain things I've got. I keep finding myself considering selling every piece of gear I own, except my tele, to get the money to buy that VM.
I'm not expecting anyone to talk me out of it, cause I know how you guys are, and if anything I'll get a bunch of people encouraging me, haha. So I don't really know what the point of this was.....haha.

i know what you mean because i started that way at first, then it rolled over to the jvm. i still like the vm, but the jvm is more versatile. i wish they made it in a 50 or 60 watt combo. the vm is definitely cool and has a superb tone quality. get it and pay it off. you won't be disappointed because you'll have what you want and it will be worth the finance charges :22:

Nah, I'de never finance any sort of gear purchase. I figure If I can't afford to pay cash, then I can't really afford to buy it. Haha.

Good thinking. Sell some things, save a little, and try to snipe one on Ebay for hundreds less. Then get a 2-12 cab, so the volume is a little more controllable.

fatty mcmetal-head.

:D

Have you plugged it into other cabs to see if the magic is there in the head, or maybe some combo of the head & cab?

I know in the past I've played a few heads that I thought were amazing and plugged into a different cab the head was lame.

Or at least not as cool...

I'de guess that the magic is most deffinately a combo of the head + cab. I'm not really sure which has more effect though. The speakers in the cab are some sort of special Greenback, they're the same ones used in the Jimi Hendrix Limited Edition marshalls. So I'm sure the speakers have something to do with it.
But really, being as I don't have money for the head, or The cab, let alone both. I'm not too concerned with it. Whatever the thing making it seem so amazing to me, I still can't afford it. Haha.

Thats actually exactly what I was thinking. Do that, and also get an attenuator. Been planning on getting an attenuator anyways. haha.
Only problem would be that they don't make a VM 212 cab, so I wouldn't be able to get those weird greenbacks they have in the VM cabs. Although I bet the normal greenbacks aren't that different really.

Well when you go back to visit it again later today, try that out & let us know!

I'm curious...

yup...different cabs make huge differences. I hated the Epi VJ combo until I hooked it into a decent 4x12. Suddenly it was an amp, and not a toy. If the VM sounds the same level of greatness in a cab you can afford, do it. If the best tone is to be had by cranking it, then an attenuater is the thing. You'll play better shows if you're totaly in love with your amp.

I know the feeling, bro. Boy, do I know the feeling. I did the same thing, go in for strings but ended up trying the amp out and played a SRV Strat through it. After a while I had to stop or I was going be in trouble. I wouldn't mind the 2x12 combo of it myself. It's a great sounding amp and IMO, the best sounding they've done in a long time.

Re: G.A.S. sucks.....(Marshall VM content)

do you think it would be usable at home with an attenuator (or without)?

M.

Without an attenuator I dunno. I have a sound proof basement, so for me yeah It would be useable at home, at least when no one else was home. It sounded really good even at low volume in the store. But it deffinately sounds best with the volume past 4 (I'm talkin about the 50watt model).
