How are these? I'm not exactly in the market for another guitar but I saw a G&L Legacy Special(With stock "Blade Buckers") for $850(I though it said w/ hard case but not sure.) in Like-New condition. Now, like I said, I really don't have the money but I've always wondered about these.

Thanks!!

Re: G&L Legacy Special?

I am a big G&L fan and own 18 of their guitars. All but one are strat bodies, with a sole ASAT Deluxe. All USA made. I own three Legacy Specials.

First off, these are fabulous guitars. G&L quality is on a par with most Custom Shop offerings; indeed with the wide range of options G&L offers, they are a custom shop.

The Legacy features vintage alnicos with a bridge humbuckers option; the S-500 uses the hot MFD single coils that Leo Fender designed. The Comanche uses the Z-Coil version of the MFD, true humbuckers with a unique single coil tone. The Legacy Special has Dual Blade pickups made by Gotoh in Japan. They have a rich, PAF-ish tone, yet with good separation and articulation. They're NOT hot rails.

The key to Legacy tone is Leo's global PTB tone control system. I normal my controls with T-10, B-5 and adjust from there. Lots of great shadings at my fingertips. The LS can go from Santana woman tone to alnico single coil bite with the Gotoh pickups and PTB. I often take an LS to my gigs to back up both my Legacy and my Les Paul...it's that versatile. And it has unique tones, too. Oh...and the best vibrato on the market.

So, if it isn't obvious, I LOVE these guitars! Give it a try. And if you don't get it let me know...I might be interested.

Wow, Thanks!

You could be a salesperson!

But in all seriousness, thanks so much for the info! I'll be going back to "look at it". Hopefully it's still there. :yourock:

Re: G&L Legacy Special?

Well, in the last TWO days, I haven't been able to get there.. They're not open on Sunday which means Monday I'll try and get there.. Probably gone..

Re: G&L Legacy Special?

I own only one G&L Legacy Special (Early 90's ??? model)

Great guitar, sweet tone that is very useable, and vibrato that holds tuning without any difficulty.

Easily worth $850...

Only negative is the vibrato bar is non-standard and can only be purchased from G&L

Thanks! I think this may be my next guitar to look for. I probably should've gotten this one.. They have like 3 month layaway, and allow us to go even longer.. Not to mention the owner usually lowers the price during us paying for it. Put a Roland cube 20x on layaway for 160$, two months later we payed it off and it ended up being 125$. We have some friends there. ;)

Re: G&L Legacy Special?

I love all my G&L's!!! I've got a U.S. & an import Legacy which are both amazing guitars!!! The P.T.B. system and their tremolos are far superior to their Fender counterparts!!! I also have an American A.S.A.T. & Fallout. Other than Fenders, G&L are the only other brand of electric guitar I own, guess I just love all things Leo??? The stock pup's are great in G&L guitars, out of the 4 I own only one of them has had one of its pickups changed, I replaced the stock JB in the bridge of my Fallout to a TB-59 because personally I just don't like JB's? Out of the 10 Fenders I have only one of them is original, I think that says a lot about how good those stock pup's sound?

Re: G&L Legacy Special?

Does the arm slip in with adjustable tension like a Wilinson, or does is screw in and remain forever loose like a Fender?

The arm is far sturdier than a Fender arm, and is easily removed by just pulling it straight out. There is a small set screw with a nylon bushing on the side of the arm's socket to adjust the lateral tension of the arm. Tighten it and the arm stays where you put it.

I've been playing G&L since about 1992, and I have NEVER heard of anyone breaking a G&L arm. So I don't see having the arm as a proprietary part a negative, in any way.

Leo Fender designed the Dual Fulcrum Vibrato. He figured out the weaknesses of his original Synchronized Tremolo sesign, and built a better mousetrap. Leo was a genius, and he never stopped trying to improve his designs. He often said that his G&Ls were the best guitars he built.
