G&L vs SG vs Music man Axis

After so much debate, post, threads about SG vs LP classic DC; upgrading cheaper guitars, and comparing SGs to other brands. I've narrowed my choices to either keeping the SG or changing it for any of these two:

G&L ASAT Deluxe (w/ rosewood fret board)- http://www.glguitars.com/frameset.htm

Music man (Ernie ball) Axis super sport - (w/ Rosewood fret board, and Humbuckers) http://www.ernieball.com/mmonline/specs/instruments_axissuper.html

I really like all three of them (SG, Axis, G&L). The G&L seems to be the best all around. It has dual humbuckers plus a toggle switch to split the pups to give more of single coil sound. It has a mahogany body and a maple top, which I think will give a very nice balance warm tone.

The Axis looks cool. I think this guitar will be brighter sounding than the SG and the G&L. That might be due to the Basswood body plus the maple top.

Anyway, I’ve never had any experience with any of those two. So I'll let you guys discuss about these choices.

One differences between the Axis and the ASAT. The neck bidding with the body on the ASAT is around the 18th fret. On the Axis is around the 17th. The ASAT comes with Seymour Duncan 59n and TB-4 bridge. The Axis comes with custom Dimarzios....
The ASAT comes with a G&L Saddle Lock bidge. Axis has a tremolo. Axis has a bolt on neck. ASAT has a set neck (I think)??????

those are all quite different guitars. what is it you like about each one? personally id stick with the sg or get the g&l. the axis isnt really my bag and not having a tone control bothers me a little

I agree with you about the Axis....Actually that is the one I am less intersted in. What I like about the G&L is that it is made out of mahogany and it has a maple top as well. I can switch for single coil types of sound with the toggle switch. That way if I need to play some cleans in the middle of a song I can. Plus if I want the rawness of humbuckers I can as well. I think (IMO) that the G&L will be like having 2 guitars in 1.

The SG is amazing, the sound, feel is great. What I like most of the SG is been able to reach those last frets.......Despite its thiin body it does deliver some warmth and a lot of bite.......

i think g&l makes some killer guitars, good materials and good workmanship. probably more versitle than an sg but ive always loved sg's. sold mine a while ago and now im kinda missing it

axis super sport has a tone control. Also, it has a neato 5-way switch so you get some pretty interesting combinations. (outer single coils and one other that I can't remember).

I like the G&L's a lot though. they are well made, and the idea it coming stock with SD pups is a nice touch. The constuction on them is great!

In the end though, I would chose the Axis (as you can see I already did). I base this primarily on the neck which is outstanding. If you get a chance to play one of these, they are really really nice. They have an asymetric back shape that fits hands perfectly, and they are great for bending. also, the wax/oil finish that they have feels amazing!! there really is no substitute for the neck. I have the string through body version of the axis, and I think that this system might be better than the trem. It's just a really good simple system, that allows for really good adjustability. Also, it comes stock with spertzel locking tuners which rule as well!

I didn't like the stock pups in the axis HB models. I found that while the switching was great, they didn't have as much low-end growl as I wanted. In the end I went with the Axis Sport (no longer in production) because I already had a flame maple capped guitar, with P90's. I am soooo happy that I got it. If you do get an axis super sport, I woud caution you that you may want to choose pickups (maybe not, some people love em), and that you really would do best trying the particular guitar out before buying. The production quality on the MM guitars, I think is some of the best out there, but since the neck is oil/wax finished, it can be abused. I take very good care of both my MM stingray (10 years old) and my axis (4 years old), and their necks stick look and play like new. But some people have abused theirs and you don't want any of that sh!t!!!

That is what I'm trying to avoid the missing part. Although, I really want a do it all guitar; I’m trying to maintain gear to its limits. I know....there must be something wrong with me....there is not such thing as having enough gear :D...but I probably be using this all around guitar for studio sessions......

I have an old strat (first guitar) and is more like a decorative thing than a playing instrument. I used to have an RG and thought that guitar could do it all....despite it was a cheap guitar.....Had it for 7 years then sold it to get something new as I upgraded all my gear.....But most of new stuff is gone as I did not felt a connection with it.....so my latest acquisition was a brand new SG which I really like but it has me wondering for something else.... :32:

There is a semi-hollow version.

Personally, I'd go with the ASAT.

Thats what I thought too.....But read a review about the ASAT deluxe and it mentioned that it was semi-hollow???? I went to the G&L site and it gives you different guitar options but the ASAT deluxe does not mention if it is solid body or semi-hollow????

G&L's are very nice guitars, but their neck shapes and sizes tend to vary a lot, so I would strongly recommend trying before buying (or at least a good return policy). I had a beautiful used 1988 ASAT that I could not play for more than a half hour without developing pain in my left hand and arm, all because of a very skinny neck with low frets. I finally gave up and traded it in for a particularly nice LP Studio. The other ASATs available in the store at the time were singularly unimpressive. YMMV

Well, I am also considering a custom guitar from "Bluline" Aaron Gauge Guitars.... Seems that the neck on these guitars is a concern among other players as well??????

As for the different necks, there are 4 or 5 different neck profiles available when ordering.

I think if you're into the SG sound, the G&L will be closer to what you like. The neck access will be less than the musicman, though. The various Musicman axis models are incredibly cool guitars, though. A friend has an EVH (now the axis), and it's a KILLER guitar. Damn thing plays itself.

Basically, you've got to hop down to a dealer and try them out. Remember that there are a ton of options from both dealers, so you should be able to tweak to your advantage.

I love Music Man guitars but I think in this case my vote would be for the G&L Asat Deluxe

The G&L site has pages for both the ASAT Deluxe & the ASAT Deluxe Semi Hollow, so you can get either.
