G String Appreciation Thread

What brand of strings do you prefer, and why? Gauge? Tuning? have you tried other brands?

I usually stick to a brand that works for me, and that would be Daddario Nickel Wounds. i love the brightness, attack and presence of daddario's... and they stay that way for a long time. The slinky feel is fantastic and they rarely break. as well as theyre very easy to intonate. the price is reasonable too.

once in a while i put ernie balls in my guitars, which are almost similar, but i always find myself going back to daddario.

ghs i find the strings get "old" really quickly and dean markleys break easy.

haven't tried elixirs yet... i couldn't be bothered by the $5 difference. i'd rather get two packs of daddarios. nobody carries DR around here that I know of, so i never got the chance to try them.

I use daddario 9-46 for standard tunings and 10-52 for a whole step down.

Re: G String Appreciation Thread

I'm not trying to sound like a smartass, but I always sound like me. It really doesn't matter if I'm playin with 10's or 9's or whatever. Sometimes I may sound a tad brighter or whatever, but I always sound like me. I agree that different strings sound different, but I always EQ my crap to sound like me anyways. It really doesn't matter what the guitar or pickup is really either.

Re: G String Appreciation Thread

i like nickle strings for the tone and dr pure blues for the feel.

i like to use a custom set of 11/15/19/28/38/54
ive gone to using a tite fit, which is a similar string but nickle plated steel, for the low e on some guitars. it gives more definition and spank which a few guitars need on the low e.

like jolly said, i sound like me no matter what strings or even guitar i play

Re: G String Appreciation Thread

I usually use D'addario 11's for standard, but I saw these today and I really want to try them out.

i agree with you man, but i guess strings are more "personal" than tonal... its the feel, the vibe... know what i mean? it's like underwear... whether you're wearing boxers or tighty-whiteys, no one would really tell the difference but you. lol.

however, this is a string appreciation thead afterall.

Ernie Ball Regular Slinkies. Tried a bunch of others over the years but these just work right for me.

Re: G String Appreciation Thread

I've generally used the standard set of 10s, although I started w/9s. There was a period of several years that I used 11s. Recently, I went back to 10s

Not so much a tone thing as how the strings feel under my fingers.

Since the G string is mentioned, I've usually used a plain G, but there was a period a few years back that I used a wound G. It seemed to give a bit more heft at the time, but it wasn't that great for tone when doing leads, especially when I started using less gain.

Re: G String Appreciation Thread

I have complex rules for which strings I use. For example:

24-3/4" scale in E or E-flat: Gibson Vintage Reissue pure nickel roundwounds 10-46, GHS Nickel Rockers 10-46 if the Gibsons aren't available

25-1/2" scale in E: GHS Boomers 9-42

25-1/2" scale in E-flat: GHS Boomers 10-46

Strats in any tuning: Fender Bullets 9-42

25-1/2" 7-string in standard tuning: Ernie Ball Regular Slinky 7-string set 10-56

+1 regular, extra, and even the beefy..... nothing else lasts as long or stays in tune better for me.
