Garry Moore tone in a pedal?

Are there any pedals that can get a close approximation to Garry Moore's tone on his version of "I Can't Quit You Baby" from his "Power of the Blues" CD? I love that warm crunch that seem's to be underneath it all as opposed to that fuzziness that seems to permiate all frequencies on most OD/distortion pedals, especially on the high end. I know nothing sounds like the real thing, but is there any pedal out there that can come close to the flavor of that tone? Thanks.

I haven't heard any of his blues stuff after the first blues album he did (or the song in particular you are talking about), but historically he's used Ibanez Tubescreamers, Marshall Guv'nors and Boss DS-1 distortion pedals, mostly through Marshalls (also if you go to the Marshall webpage and look at the Marshall Law online magazines, there is an article with his guitar tech showcasing his gear). On the live still got the Blues concert video (the one with Alberts King and Collins) he was using a Soldano head and sounds like the Tubescreamer as well. That was one of the best live sounds, if not THE best I've heard of Gary.

Thanks Jeff. I know there are a lot of variables to ones tone, but you'd think with the technology these days they could somehow capture that sound in a stomp. When I think of a "Marshall in a box" the tone from that song is what I'd like to hear. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Wouldn't it be nice if they could capture Eddies or Gary's or Jimmi's or whomevers exact tone in a little $50 stomper :D

I'm afraid I have no other really good suggestions if the Marshall Law article doesn't give you any further clues. Perhaps he has a fan site or such where one could email a question ? (as big of a fan I am of Gary, I've never even thought about looking for such a thing).

Or you may search out some guitar magazine interviews of the time period when that CD was released. They often ask artists questions like "what did you use to get the sound on X song?" At least they used to. Haven't picked up guitar mag in many years.

Good luck. I'm gonna try and get a listen to that song, as you've piqued my curiosity now :)

Re: Garry Moore tone in a pedal?

I've heard guys come VERY close with a G2D custom overdrive into a fender amp.

www.g2d.co.nz

A lot of his 'still got the blues' tones were a '59 paul, a marshall guvnor pedal and a marshall bluesbreaker combo ri.

UK Guitarist mag had him on the cover for their summer 04 issue, and included video footage, both live and interview (with him playing). Find it if you can, it's pretty cool.

Yeah, I've got that issue. He said on "I Can't Quit You Baby" he used an old Marshall amp. 2-12's, open back cab with 50 watts. I can't exactley remember the name of the amp...something like...Tremo-something. GREAT tone. If I could find something of that flavor in a pedal, WOW!!
