Gary Moore Signature Les Pauls

There is a Gary Moore Signature Les Paul for sale near me.

Seller is asking for $2800.

So I was curious to its specs.

After a small amount of research, I realized it's really just an overpriced Gibson Les Paul Studio!

Hear me out...

Here's by definition what make a Studio different from a Standard...

"The Studio was designed to attract guitar players who desired traditional Les Paul sound without having to pay for cosmetic features of upscale models. In order to produce a lower-cost Les Paul, features such as body binding, neck binding, and headstock inlays were not available."

The Gary Moore Signature Les Paul...

"The Gary Moore Les Paul Standard is rooted in Les Paul tradition, with a top carved from figured Grade-AA maple, and a back crafted from Grade-A mahogany. To better show of the luscious nitrocellulose Lemonburst finish, the body carries no binding or pickguard. It is strategically weight-relieved to render this a superbly comfortable guitar. The neck is made from quarter-sawn Grade-A mahogany and carved to a rounded ’50s profile that measures 0.818” at the 1st fret and 0.963” at the 12th. It is topped with an unbound Granadillo fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional acrylic trapezoid inlays. "

So other than an inlaid "Gibson" headstock and the fretboard material (which is Granadillo), the guitar is really a Studio, not a Standard?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Gary Moore and his monster playing.... But this is more of Gibson gimmicks is it not?

You don't get quartersawn necks, that kind of attention to the carving, or even grade AA woods on Studios, so it's not exactly a Studio. But overpriced is a question of if you played it and found it to be worth it or not. Gibson prices are certainly high to start with - they push the envelope on that on all instruments they make.

I think you're right. I'm thinking it was closer to a grand, because there was less of the finishing & detail work done on it.

I had a Gibson Les Paul Studio Premium Plus for awhile. That was just as good as the Gary Moore.

I'd post the pics, but the new rules from Photobucket prevent it.

It was similar to this one...

I thought Studios were all mahogany. Also, Gibson necks have been one piece for some time I'd thought?

I believe the fretboard material is not rosewood, but yes they have been one piece mahogany necks for over 30 years. The 70's into early 80's was three piece maple.

I have to admit, I wasn't a fan of that guitar when it came out...I like Pauls with binding.

I think the seller's price is high; you should check E-Bay comps and the "Vintage Guitar Price Guide". It was a very limited edition, so if rarity is important to you.... And who knows...this might just be THE greatest LP you've ever played, with tone to match. Tone beats binding, every time.

Myself, there are other Paul models at that price that I would much rather have. A used R7 or R8 Plaintop Historic won't be that much more.

Didn't see much on eBay for price guides, but Reverb has them around $1700 to $2500

Still seems like a lot to me. I think I'll look for another Premium Plus Studio first.

Re: Gary Moore Signature Les Pauls

The original Gary Moore LP was much less expensive than what the seller is asking. Gary Moore worked with Gibson to keep certain specs up while keeping others down; like binding (which can be a very expensive part of any guitar). I looked at the same model on Reverb and they're all asking well over $2k for each of them. Probably because Gary Moore has passed away. Still, too much $$$ for that guitar.

FYI, you can upload pics from your computer directly to the forum.

Burstbucker Pros with 'blistering tones'. Not the PU's I'd expect on a Peter Green LP.
