I recently started a Les Paul thread, (about picks ups, and transformed into a fully customized Studio vs 2nd hand '77 stock Custom) because a Les Paul WILL be my next solid body - PERIOD !

At the same time, i can not ignore my rapidly increasing GAS for yet another Gibson. Oh dear . . .

YIKES . . . how so ?

The pickups Gibson uses on Firebirds are just terrible...they are overwound and ceramic based and they don't have any of the character of 60's Firebird pickups...they are just hot and bright.

The bridge and tailpiece are sort of junky, the Steinberger tuners are cool I guess and some folks like 'em but I'm not one of them.

I realize this is all a matter of opinion but IMO these are all negatives.

Also FWIW, and I am NOT a Gibson basher...just the opposite in fact. I think Gibson is making some of the best guitars they've made in a long time but the fit and finish on new Firebirds is terrible...

It seems like they just toss a batch together now and then and feel like that's good enough and to me it's not.

The Johnny Winter Firebird was pretty good, I hated the relicing on it but as a guitar it was a solid piece.

Standard Firedbird V's and the VII's from a few years ago are just pretty bad.

Now...this year they dropped a line of Firebird reissues...a 1963 Firebird I, a 1964 Firebird III, and a 1965 Firebird V and VII.

They use correct pickups and hardware as far as I know and by all counts are amazing. All that said I have not played one yet so I can't give you any info or even an opinion since I have nothing to go on.

I ill say this...over the years Gibson has done little small runs of Historic Firebird's...I have played some of those and they have been rather stunning so I have high hopes for the reissue series!

Well, here's my Firebird Studio. It's not the "traditional" Firebird but retains the shape and that's probably where the similarities end. I love it! The only thing I HAD to change was the pickups. I don't remember what's stock in these (alnico II mags) but they weren't for me. I dropped a set of Nailbombs in and, BAM!

I was gassing for one of those zebrawood ones a while back! I'd take a white one anyday too!

The Duncan Antiquities are great and Curtis Novak makes one too...I have not even heard the version Curtis winds but his other pickups are top notch so I am sure his Firebird pickups are great too.

I'm sure there are others but those are the 2 I'd suggest.

FWIW, I am sure somebody will mention Lollar any minute...not a fan of the Lollar stuff at all.

Re: GAS is hitting hard again ! . . . thanks Gibson.

Zhangbucker and Skatterbrane would be two who could wind a great firebird pickup. Zhang, because I've had minis from him which are amazing (and bird pickups are a bit similar). Skatterbrane because he bases his mini's off the 60's Epiphone ones....and the best bird pickups seem to be the old ones too

Will look into them too - thanks.

I just wish they didn't put nuclear fusion pickups into those.

Same problem with that line's bass, the Thunderbord.
