For some reason I just had to check out warmoth's showcase. So, I notice they have PRS imitations (VIP) and I found some resonable stuff.

I'm wondering how this would sound. What it would be comparable to, ect.

Body: PRS copy (VIP), Black Limba

Neck: Warmoth conversion 24 3/4" fatback, Wenge with and ebony fretboard.

Pup:
Bridge choices - SD 59 or Custom
Neck - 59 or Jazz

You're very pretty ;)

Hey! You said lie to you. LOL

Sorry I can't lie...

Sorry I can't lie...

Warmoth rules:approve: But you are not making a PRS clone with these woods, just a guitar that looks like a PRS. In any case, Warmoth has quality woods that are the base for a good guitar. I just made a Warmoth strat and I love it.

A bolt-neck PRS-style guitar is going to feel weird.

When going Warmoth, I always try to stick with stuff that's traditionally bolt-on like Strats, Teles, Jags, etc. But that's just my guitar-luddite behavior coming through.

Why is that? I has got to feel better than PRS's heal from hell. LOL!!!!

PRS has the CE model since the early 90's. Now they have also the Johnny Hiland model, also a bolt on. Both guitars are great and... expensive!

+1, PRS makes bolt-ons

I'm really wondering how Limba (Black Korina) and Wenge are as tone woods. I've looked them up online in a few places, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these. I'd rather hear a review from a SD member than a sales person.

I looked up Limba (Black Korina) in a search before I posted this and almost all the threads were about the color Korina, ect. Very little info on Wenge also.

Also, I'm not trying to make a PRS copy, I just like the shape of the PRS (Warmoth VIP) body.

Re: GAS: Someone tell me this would sound terrible, Lie to me if you have to

black korina is a killer body wood. Makes for a fantastic gutiar.

Wenge...I'm not so sure on. I know warwick uses that wood on some of their basses. Might make for a unique-sounding guitar...though...I dunno. I can't say that I'd recommend it.

Re: GAS: Someone tell me this would sound terrible, Lie to me if you have to

Black Korina sells a lot in Warmoth, it's an alternative choice for mahogany, slightly brighter so most of the users do not use a maple top.

Disclaimer: If you don't need one of these, skip this post.

I done put together a Warmoth with that exact wood combination. It's magic. Magic I tell you. I really liked the Limba for the body. It had just the right amount of heft and a really nice resonance. Kinda like alder with some added mahogany warmth and walnut dryness. Wenge turns out to be one of the most vibrant woods I've ever met. I dropped a piece on the floor and it rang better than most claves. I really like feeling the note I'm playing as well as fret/fingerboard noise in the neck. This guitar had that. To sustain a note, you could lightly drum on the back of the neck and it would feed into the strings. Just keep in mind wenge is more like a weed than a tree. It's extremely porous, well, it's more like a bunch of super stiff fibers with space between them. If you want to cut your own headstock, sandwich a thin layer of something like maple on both sides for the entire shaping process, otherwise it'll chip and flake.

Re: GAS: Someone tell me this would sound terrible, Lie to me if you have to

Wenge is heavy as hell. It is also tends to be splintery and painful. No idea how it sounds, and if it's shaped well that shouldn't be a problem, just be aware.

Also, I doubt wenge is that stable in terms of moisture, since it is very porous. But it is also really oily, and it has a nice feel unfinished. In fact, I think you can get away with using it unfinished.

Re: GAS: Someone tell me this would sound terrible, Lie to me if you have to

The wenge neck I had didn't seem to be much heavier than maple. And supposedly it's quite stable. Ebony is known to undergo large dimensional changes in response to humidity, so I don't think it's porousness that causes it.

Re: GAS: Someone tell me this would sound terrible, Lie to me if you have to

Just wanted to mention that Ibanez uses (or used at least) wenge as a neck wood on some of their Prestige SZ models, which are very PRSesque to begin with. They also used bubinga.

The Swamp Ash Special is another bolt-on...

I dig the hell out of mine. Generally I like the PRS bolt-ons more then the set-necks...

Go figure.
