Gauss meter phone app!?

I just downloaded a gauss meter Android app. Has anyone tested if it works on alnico magnets? Is it reliable? I'm at work now but when I get home I'm gona test it. Anyone here use a gauss meter app on their phone or is it a bunch of BS? It does work when I hold my phone up to electronic stuff..

Re: Gauss meter phone app!?

It is probably using the compass.

I think there was some complex magnet-to-magnet versus magnet-to-passivemagnetic difference going on that made it nontrivial to use a compass for measuring pickups.

It uses the magnetometer.

So this can be used to test the strength of alnico with good results? I want to check if I degaussed correctly?

To be honest I have seen the apps but I havent used them. My concern with it being an app is, with a real gauss meter i have a wand that i can precisely locate and know where the meter is reading so i can tell if a magnet is charged evenly along its length. With the phone I dont know where its reading from its not precise and i get the bad feeling that the app is more of a go/no go gauge in that it isnt accurate enough to do what we do with pickups. That its good for reading yes there is magnetism in this area... no there isnt magnetism in this area.

But that being said I only suspect this as I havent actually tried the app i could be completely wrong.
