Gettin used to Jazz picks.

I've been playing around with Jazz III picks as of lately. I've been playing Dunlop Ultex Sharp .73's for a long time. But I'm starting to get used to the feel and control of the Jazz III mainly the Max Grip type. The problem I've been having of course is the size but I'm starting to think it is something I'll get used to. There seems a firmness of control as well as tone that seems to be selling me.

You'll get used to it...I used Tortex .73 or Fender Heavies for over a decade and was able to change...in fact when I go to a "full size" pick now it feels like I'm trying to play with a pie plate!

It's worth it too IMHO...I like the way they feel, sound and they last LOTS longer than the Totrex or Fender stuff.

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

just gotta grip it with the tips of your fingers instead of a whole section of finger. Takes a little getting used to, but once you do, the precision and accuracy you get from jazz picks is totally unparalleled

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

I love my Max Grip Jazz IIIs, my playing has become a lot cleaner since I moved over to them from Dunlop Tortex picks. The Jazz picks have slowly made it impossible to go back to regular sized picks though, but I'm glad I made the switch.

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

I went through at lot of different picks before sticking to the Jazz III shape. One thing I noticed about my technique with the old picks was that I was holding them very close to the tip, almost like a Jazz III, but with a lot of extra material hanging out behind my thumb and finger, so for me, the transition wasn't too hard, but as everyone else is saying, the accurancy and definitions is incredible, and my playing has improved at a much faster rate since switching over

I'm thinking I will see, but I'm getting to think I can get used to the size.

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

I can hardly play with a regular sized pick anymore, I feel like I can't control.

You could go with a JazzIII XL or a Planet Waves Black Ice, if you want the same shape in a larger pick.

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

I've recently switched to the ultex jazz 3 after playing the red xl jazz. Taken me a month to get used to them but well worth it. Much smoother tone.

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

when I first switched to them, I was hitting the strings too hard cuz the picks are so firm and pointed. But after a few days I got used to them and my plcking has improved

Ive been thinking bout trying the Ultex Jazz III. Ive been using the Ultex ultra sharp .73 for a lil while now. I like the brightness and attack it gives but at times I find myself missing the smoothness of the Jazz III. How do the Ultex Jazz III compare? I might buy the some thicker Ultex sharps or the Ultex Jazz IIIs or the Carbon fiber Jazz III

I switched to Jazz IIIs over a decade ago. Never went back. Now, I like to say that playing with a regular pick is like running in clown shoes! Haha

The ultex Jazz III's are a bit "smoother" feeling and seem to almost have a bit of give while the carbon fiber has no give whatsoever (then again the Jazz III's don't have much, if any. It feels like they do compared to the CF Jazz III's though, oddly enough) and the CF is a bit "clickier" in tone. They seem to "snap" off the strings whereas the ultex seem too almost "glide" off. It really is a feel thing. Spend a few bucks and give 'em a shot. See what you like. It's tough to describe with all the stupid "buzz" words that go around.

Re: Gettin used to Jazz picks.

I just got through playing a short recital/gig playing Santana's "Samba Pa Ti." I used a Max Grip Jazz III. It's the best I've played live in a long time. Great control with the pick, speed and tone. I'm definitely going to buy a lot more. Thanks.
