Dont use too much distortion, start really low and find the spot where it crunches like you want. Don't use too much reverb, long trails will make you sound bad too.

play with ur guitar volume knob. lower the volume and it cleans up real nice.

Just keep in mind that all of your favorite dirty tones on CD have probably half the gain you'd expect when you go to dial it in on your own amp ;). Also, don't dime the bass, and use a healthy amount of mids.

Crank the clean channel till it breaks up just right, thats all there is to it.

I'm guessing that you're describing the driven fender combo tone. Little to no 'heavy grit' in the upper mids, just a sustaining, fluid OD sound. That's like the sound of a Deluxe reverb and a TS9.

Roll the tone on your guitar down a bit to round it off, put a light amount of gain, easy on the bass, but don't overdial the mids-THAT's what achieves a gritty dirty more Marshall-ish sound. Turn the treble up and use your tone knob to fine tune the high end, and fine tune the gain using your volume control.

One of the most important techniques for that waily smooth OD is that tone knob-don't be afraid to roll it back a tad! A decent neck humbucker with the tone back quite a bit will sing!
