Getting a THD univalve tomorrow :)

its 15W, the only factor that makes me think twice. The sound, EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

i play a lot of basement shows where we don't mic our amps...so im not sure if it will be loud enough. I've been told its the loudest 15W amp I'll ever hear, anyone have experience with them?

Dude, sweet! I've always wanted to try one! I would love to make my Valve Junior into a UniValve type amp, so I could swap power tubes.

Re: Getting a THD univalve tomorrow :)

yeah its a great idea! i love how much you can do with it, i cant wiat to spend many many hours trying out different tubes for different sounds.

Re: Getting a THD univalve tomorrow :)

Congrats! I just got me one some months ago. It's a great amp, after trying lots and lots I've finally somehow settled down now.

One can't really call the Univalve a 15w amp. Every output tube you put in there has a different rating, from the common ones the 6v6 having the least and the KT88 the most output. There's also a difference between the clean output of a tube and the dirty output of a tube.

Also when considering the overall volume and if it's sufficient for gigging or not you have to think of your speakers/cabinets as well. Efficient speakers have a huge effect on volume, it's just not all about the amp.

Ignoring technical stuff (speaker efficiency, room position etc)
Your 15w will be 70% the loudness of a 50watt amp. Or LOUD.
Turn it down to about 5watts..... and you will still be as loud as a trumpet playing full bore.

Put it the other way around:
Apply a 1watt signal to a speaker and listen from 1 yard away.
Lets assume this gives you a nice 90dB signal - fairly loud.
Now up the input to your 15watts - about 99dB coming at you now.
Not a lot louder. Like the difference between heavy city traffic from the roadside and the crowd noise you hear when you are at the ball game. Or the difference between the sound of a one-on-one conversation and the hubub you hear standing in a bar or restaurant. But absolutely (rather than relatively) WAY louder than either scenario.

I run my 6G6-A into an attenuator that drops it's 50w to 3w through the 4x12 - and the drummer still complains about the loudness.

If it REALLY is a problem for you, but the tone is spot on - buy a good solid-state combo and a good microphone, and mic the little amp either into the SS combo, or the PA if they have one. Keep your tone but give yourself loads of options according to the venues.....
