Im new to the world of looped beats, midi samples and all of that... playing around just a bit i discovered i want to go deeper into this, but dont know where to start!!

to give an example:

check 0:30

where can you get samples like that?
do you record them yourself?
what kind of midi controller do you recommend for a begginer?
what kind of programs to trigger it?

i believe you must also have a laptop and a soundcard right? or is there a standalone device?

thank you very much in advice

Re: Getting started with looping / midi.

You can do it on a DAW or by a standalone sequencer/sampler like some of the Akai samplers (there are many other brands) http://www.akaipro.com/mpc.

The cooler stuff is usually hand rolled. As an example, take a phrase loop it, add effects, turn it around, chop it into beats, resample it and assign it to a keyboard or sampler like the Akai or a software sampler. There are no rules.

Re: Getting started with looping / midi.

i just checked out ableton and its wonderful... amazing software with lots of extras.

i guess i can do for now with it... but in the future, especially to play live, i will need a nice controller

any recommendations? theres a novation one that has a built in soundcard and xlr inputs....

Re: Getting started with looping / midi.

I don't know that one, Novation is a very good company, look at M-Audio for cheap and pretty good midi controllers.
