GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

Well it been a very long time since hung out on the Duncan forum but I'm back playing guitar :)

I have picked up a a Crafted in Japan 90's Squier Jagmaster, this to be precise

I like it but the pickups lack a little something, so am thinking of going down the P90 route and throw in some GFS Mean 90's.

Not got a guitar that has p90's so thought it might be an interesting little experiment.

Anybody done a similar thing?

Cheers

Re: GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

That's an awesome guitar! Congrats and welcome back. :beerchug:

I have the regular 'bucker-sized Mean 90 in the neck of a MIJ Squier Supersonic. It's a great pickup for the price and I'm more than happy with it. It's paired up with a '59/Custom in the bridge and they're a great pair.

Re: GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

I did exactly that with my former bandmate on his Jag II, in 2010.

The GFS Mean 90s were a revelation to me, as I bought'em just because they were cheap... but once installed and correctly setup, they exceeded my and anybody else's expectatives by light years and then some. Didn't even need to change magnets! LOL!

That, and changing to 11-49 strings worked wonders for his tone; it still is his #1 guitar for blues, even though he's got several others, much more expensive Fender and Gibson guitars.

Old fashion smoky, filthy bar blues is "his" thing.

HTH,

Cheers for the replies and the welcome back.

Although the Prails route would give me flexibility, I hate too many choices and switches - it's why I don't own a Jaguar!

Think I'll pull the plug on Dream 90s or maybe mix it with a Mean 90? Not sure, decisions, decisions but nice ones :)

Re: GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

If the body on the Jagmaster is Agathis, I suggest fitting bright pickups to compensate.

Re: GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

DON'T. DO. THAT.

The Dreams are as bad as the Means are good.

Consider yourself warned!

This is the truth, the Dream 90's have small Fender-sized bobbins and don't sound anything like a P90, the Mean 90's are the ones that have gotten great reviews. Pass on the Dreams and go for the Means.

HTH,

I've put a pair of Mean 90's in my SG and couldn't be happier with it... GREAT score.

By the way, how do you setup your mean 90's? I found it better with the bridge very close to the strings and the neck a bit higher than I had my 59.

+1. Lots of good things said here about Mean 90's. I can't recall anything positive said about Dream 90's. I suppose someone must like them...

Re: GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

Mean 90's are very good pups, even at twice the price. But at the cost of about $35 (IIRC) they are a steal. Will work terrific in your guitar.

Re: GFS mean 90 for Jagmaster

PS: Like Rick said, I too have not heard any good comments about the Dream 90. A few bad reviews but not a single good one. I've heard many great reviews about the Mean 90.

I've got two or three Mean 90s that I've shifted around into several guitars and I love them in anything I've put them in.
