Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

You should have a ''it's worth what you pay for'' option.

Personally, if you want to talk about a good deal, check out the PRS SE One. Same thing minus a tone knob, and about 350$ less. I know it's not american made, but the ones I played were amazing.

Anyways, the gibson juniors I played were also great instruments. I don't think I would pay that amount for them, but if the sound is what you are after, they are well worth the price.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

They are good guitars...I don't feel they are worth the price. I most definitely agree with plil104...the PRS "One" is a great guitar for a much better price.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

I think Gibson LP Jrs. are great. One day I'll run the racks and pick one that sounds right. I'm secretly hoping PRS will just make a MIA "One" that rapes Gibsons. Heck, a McCarty with one dog ear P90 could be really cool too (kinda a take off of a LP Special DC). Now that I'm thinking about it, the Mira kinda has that SG thing going on, they need to make one with a wraptail bridge and one dog ear P90. C'mon PRS, are you listening?

I don't think the one pickup matters. It's just what you like. Some people say it lacks versatility but I just got a P90 in the neck on my SG and I haven't used the bridge humbucker in a few weeks now. There's no point in me even having the bucker. I would buy the guitar if I really liked it but I would rather have one of those things in my avatar...

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

Since my Jr was the best guitar I owned I can only vote yes to the Jr.

You know like any guitar you'll have to play a few to find the one you feel right with but that is the joy of shopping for a guitar. A solid mahogany guitar and a P-90 is a thing of beauty, if it says Gibson on the headstock well more power to it in my book.

Look around used for them too. I have seen plenty of the BJA Jr's for sale and they seem a bit nicer then the standard line, also look for mid 80's Jr with a stop/Tom setup, spanking guitars!

^^ 100% accurate

it's all mahogany, it's a Gibson with a P90...spring for a hardshell case if you want but c'mon that's a ****in junior.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/p...tar?sku=580091 - $840.00 w gig bag

We know that we pay for the name (to a degree) with any big name brand w a rich heritage.

Would you guys say this is a good value for what you get ?
The LP Jr comes w a true Gibson P90 (not P100), Nitrocellulose Lacquer, and gig bag.

For a guitar, is this good value or not ?

James

I don't think it is. If you're interested in it as an instrument, it's an extra short scale all mahogany guitar. You'd be better off looking at the Godin lg series. They have an lg model that is also all mahogany, but has a 25" scale, 16" radius fret board, and duel P90s which opens up the door to more tones.

If you're interested in owning a les paul, it won't provide the les paul tone and will be much closer to an SG.

If you're interested in owning a Gibson, there are nicer looking guitars by Gibson out there. I like the melody maker as far as lower end Gibsons go. But you can also find used Les Paul studios for $800 and less pretty easily.

Edit: The PRS SE series is great, but you have to enjoy PRS necks.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

Juniors are 24.75 scale like all other LP's. If you need another pup get a Special.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

I'd go for a older Hamer Special over a Jr any day, better quality, sound and they come stock with SD's. Still own the Red and TV Yellow in my avatar. Great axes for the price. Paid $700 & $400 for them respectively. Just my humble opinion.

Peace,

Darrin

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

The Hamers are cool but not necessarily better. You are also talking about doublecut vs singlecut, there is a different low mid response from the 2 and a different feel. Again no better no worse just what you like.

Sorry, I'm an idiot. Thanks for correcting me. The MF site describes the guitar in this way:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Les-Paul-Junior-Electric-Guitar?sku=580091
"Today's Gibson Les Paul Junior electric guitar captures many of the same details and intensity as the original, including a 24" scale length mahogany neck"

The Gibson website has the correct specs on it.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

I love Juniors but I own a PRS One (which I have modified slightly).

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

I had a MM LP then a 96 Jr and I just couldn't make do without having that sweet neck pickup.............

They are cool guitars, but just too much of a one trick pony.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

Figure Gibson probably has $200 into it, tops. You tell me if it's worth $840. You can get a lot more for your money getting a used Gibson of another model instead.

Re: Gibbos LP Jr - good deal ?

I've played several LP Juniors over the years: single- and double-cut LPs and SG. For some guys the Junior is enough, but my fave will always be the single-cut Special. I love the looks of the double-cut Special, but the single has the neck pickup in the right spot, and they're just a more versatile guitar. The Gibson Custom Shop did a run of Historic single cut Specials, and I want one so bad to replace my 1975 '55 Special that I had to sell.

Is it worth $XXX??? Well, I think the guys in Nashville that build them earn their money. The real question is: is it worth it to you?

Yep, I have to agree. Having owned two custom shop LP Special DCs, the sound just isn't as good as the singlecuts thanks to Gibson refusing on making one with the neck pickup in the right place. It makes for some interesting tones, but I could never get the neck P90 to be as warm or the middle (both pups) position to be as balanced sounding.
