Does anyone know the output specs on this baby? I just want to make sure I can match it up in a Les Paul with a JB. Thanks.

+1. I would say that the 496R is one of the best neck pickups I've ever played. Clear and articulate, and yet raw and gutsy.dr.barlo said:I dare say that I think 496R is the best ceramic neck pickup I ever used.

Breogan said:If the 496R output it's too much you allways can change the magnet for an alnico V.
dr.barlo said:Yeah but still it would have 2 more ceramic magnets. 496R's and 500t's come with 3 ceramic magnets, the bar + the two spacers which are magnets as well.
So it ain't that easy. You also gotta steal them 2 spacers from other PAF-like pickups.

Is it really the case? I have a copy of an old Gibson product reference manual (for salespeople) and it says that only the 500T comes with 3 magnets, whereas the 496R uses just one magnet and two spacers.dr.barlo said:Yeah but still it would have 2 more ceramic magnets. 496R's and 500t's come with 3 ceramic magnets, the bar + the two spacers which are magnets as well.

I was going to go with a Custom, actually. It is the best match and is has a ceramic magnet to match up with the 469R. It is heavier sounding and I think it is more for me. It also has higher ratings on Musicians Friend and Harmony Central.Tony_H said:+1. I would say that the 496R is one of the best neck pickups I've ever played. EDIT: In my experience, the best bridge-position match for a 496R is the Duncan Custom. But a JB is a good choice as well I think.

I haven't taken my 496R apart to see for myself.

Barlo, what did the 500T sound like (tonal difference) after you took out the two spacer magnets?dr.barlo said:That might very well be the case. I have replaced the magnetic spacers of the 500T myself, but did not open up a 496R. Simply assumed they had similar construction. Now I feel that assumption of mine might be wrong. Dunno!
In this case Breogan's suggestion is right on!
Cool!
