I'd confirm that with the seller. Many "darkbacks" look black in pics, but in reality they are a very dark brown/maroon color and not actually black.

Nice looking guitar, but I would still be inclined to buy another Edwards instead, all the features (except being made in the US), much less $$$

(Probably sounds like I'm being an ass, but it's just my opinion)

You're not an ass, but I think you are not really informed to the specs and materials used on Edwards. They look like the same thing, but they're not.

I'm an ESP fan too, spedn a lot of time on the ESP boards as well, and you'll find that Edwards is about on par with the Ltd line in terms of quality of materials and labor. I would consider an Edwards to be competition for the likes of Epiphone, Agile, and Ltd, but no way is it up to snuff to a Gibson historic. Just no way.

I wonder what year it is. I'm trying to figure out it's gold color. It doesn't look much like the Bullion Gold to me, but that could just be the pics.

By the SN# it's a 2004 57RI. Goltops are the hardest to truely take pics of, they seem to change they way they look with shades of lighting etc.

Jeff, did you make this thread just cause you know I'm jonesin for one of these?;)

man i'm with you...i have gold top GAS also but i want to finish another strat first then it's gold top time i think! although i'm going to be sinful with mine (to some) and rock a zebra pickup in the bridge and a chrome covered neck pickup!! that look just screams "rock star" to me lol and for some reason looks cool on a goldtop (IMO).

I understand the whole photo flame over maple cap etc., but there is no way I would pay the $$$ for a historic when I could get 2 or 3 nice Edwards, which at my level of playing are gonna be just as toneful to me, this is the best quality of LP I'm likely to own.

Unfortunatley over here the good Gibby's are even more ridiculously priced than over there, event Std' are pricey for what they are...

But if I were offered one or the other for free I'd choose a Gibson.

*Edit* - I'd also consider it fair to say that my Edwards is made better than my Studio.

Each historic Gibby is just an indiividual. every one I've touched was different to either my hands, my ears or both. Every historic I own, I either had a chance to play first or had a no-BS return policy. And, that personal policy of mine is not because of all the "defects" in gibsons or finish flaws or whatever. They just all feel different to me. Neck profiles vary even within a model such as a 56, just depends on what year they were made. I've got a 98 and it's a killer goldtop that the previous owner didn't know how to set up. It's the heaviest of my three, but it has a tone that is to die for. You also have to play them unplugged and judge them on that merit first and foremost.

So, in a very long roundabout way, I guess I'm saying I'd want to play the goldtop in ebay ad before I bought it. Or, I'd be cool with paying 200 more to buy at a shop I trust with a great return policy. YMMV. :)
