Does anyone have a good picture of the 85 explorer? What specs did it have? What pickups did they have back then?

I am not sure what cam in the Exlporer back then, but I have an 85 335. The pickups in it are stock & they are the PAF reissue. They have a label on the top of them that says "Patent Applied For" in the pickup ring area of the pickup. These are awesome pickups. I would never consider changing them in this guitar

It depends on what type of Explorer you have...Gibson used several different pickups as stock in the middle 80's...

Metlking, is that a maple cap on mahogany?
I know Gibson experimented with 2 or 3 different woods on the Explorers in the 80s. Alder was another wood they messed around with. The E2 was a 5 ply...maple and walnut I believe.
My buddy's Explorer was like the ones they make now. It was black with a white pickguard, the switch was on the lower horn, and the knobs were in a straight line. We took some white decal vinyl and cut out about 100 white dots the size of a nickel and did it up like Rhodes' V or Buddy Guy's Strat. It turned out great.

No cap, just Mahogany. Pretty light weight too for a big body like that! I also have a 91 with the pickguard like your buddy has...I prefer it. :naughty:
