Does anyone have a good picture of the 85 explorer? What specs did it have? What pickups did they have back then?

Re: gibson '85 pickups

I am not sure what cam in the Exlporer back then, but I have an 85 335. The pickups in it are stock & they are the PAF reissue. They have a label on the top of them that says "Patent Applied For" in the pickup ring area of the pickup. These are awesome pickups. I would never consider changing them in this guitar

Re: gibson '85 pickups

A friend of mine back in the day had an '84 Explorer and I'm 99% sure it came with Dirty Fingers pups.

Re: gibson '85 pickups

is the dirty fingers that is produced today, the same that they used back in the good 'ol 80's?

This is my 84' Explorer with Dirty Fingers pickups. I've seen identical 85's.........

Metlking, is that a maple cap on mahogany?

I know Gibson experimented with 2 or 3 different woods on the Explorers in the 80s. Alder was another wood they messed around with. The E2 was a 5 ply...maple and walnut I believe.

My buddy's Explorer was like the ones they make now. It was black with a white pickguard, the switch was on the lower horn, and the knobs were in a straight line. We took some white decal vinyl and cut out about 100 white dots the size of a nickel and did it up like Rhodes' V or Buddy Guy's Strat. It turned out great. :D

No cap, just Mahogany. Pretty light weight too for a big body like that! I also have a 91 with the pickguard like your buddy has...I prefer it. :naughty:

I guess it's the light in the pic making it look darker on the bottom. Cool guitar, btw.
