Gibson Explorer Keeps Breaking String

The high e seems to be breaking right after the nut towards the tuners.

I look at the nut, the slot itself is a little wider than it should be from when I was using an .11 and had the nut cut for that. It’s definitely not binding.

When I last too wrapped the guitar, the string fared better. I use a graphite nut.

What gives?

It’s not actually breaking at the nut, maybe like an inch past it.

Re: Gibson Explorer Keeps Breaking String

Breaking in that spot has nothing to do with your guitar.
The only thing that can make a string break mid-air is either a nick in the string or a defective string from the mfr.

By any chance, is that point on the string where you hold it when restringing? (I.e. to keep tension on the string while wrapping on the posts)

Great observation. I honestly have no idea. This makes a lot of sense though.

Re: Gibson Explorer Keeps Breaking String

In 60 years I've never broken a string in that location regardless of how I hold the string when restringing and regardless of the guitar or tuner types. Even when I've put used strings back on.
