Gibson Explorer - PG instead of SH14 C5?

Hey guys!

It's been a long time since I was here the last time.
I'm thinking 'bout changing the C5 on my Explorer to a Pearly Gates, I have one at the neck position and I really love the sound and so I'm thinking about having one at the bridge position, too.

I play a lot of styles in my 3 bands, from Blues to Black Metal (including ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Van Halen, Metallica, Led Zeppelin etc.), but I think the "lack" of output to the C5 is no problem, because my amplifier and my OD/Dist. pedals (Boss OS2 and MT2) have enough reserves...

I also think the more open sound will fit well for a nasty brizzling Black Metal sound. But what will be with a wall of sound such as Metallica's Black Album sound? Possible? I think so, but what do you say? With todays equipment it shouldn't be a problem?!

I'm leaning towards the zebra one to add a bit of colour to my guitar, I photoshopped it (have a look at the attachment).

Thanks! :1:

You should try a Alnico 8 in the C5 before you buy a PG. Its a cheaper alternative to buying a new pup. I suck at giving descriptions of tone but here a link to a thread with Custom coil pups (Custom, CC, C5) that had a mag swap to A8.

The C8 can play all those bands you listed. If you don't like it I guess you can try the PG. I actually like lower output pups like 59' or PG for metal.

+1. The C8 has some of the A2's characteristics, without the loose low end, overly rounded top, and low output.

My explorer didn't really like A2 PAFs, Ants in my case.

It liked the Jazz in the neck and some heavy-hitter in the bridge.

The aggressive base sound just comes out thin in the trebly bridge PAFs or something like that.

How can I do a magnet swap? I'm not so good in manual things, where can I get an A8-magnet in Germany?

Wymore guitars.com ships overseas, he's also a member of this forum. Contact him. He's very helpfu.

There's a lot of old posts here on magnets swaps, and some instruction online (like projectguitar.com).
