Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

Ok, here's the deal. I'm thinking of trading my Gibson Firebird V from '90 for a '97 Fender Jimi Hendrix VoodooCaster. I thought this would be a good place to ask the question since I guess it's kind of neutral compared to the fender/gibson forums. I just wanna know what you think of the deal. The Firebird is probably more worn than the Voodoocaster looks to be. Oh, and here's photos:

What do you think people!?

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

I have a black Voodoo Strat. Are you trading even on this? If not, let me know, maybe we can work a deal.

Just noticed that the sunburst Strat doesn't have the Hendrix sticker still on the pickguard.

Yeah, it's an even deal. You see very few of these around in sweden so I don't really know what the value of the guitar is but my guess is that it's around the same as the firebird. I'm not sure though. How do you like the Voodoocaster btw?

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

I'm a Firebird guy (car as well) ... but ohhh hard choice.

But I wouldn't trade away that Firebird, I'd wait, save and get a Strat on top of the Firebird

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

Well that voodoocaster will rise in value I'd think.

But if your not doing as an investment I'd probably play both and try to decide.

I would probably end up owning the firebird personally.

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

Keep the 'bird build a Jimi trib. It's not even close.

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

Well, the voodoo isn't meant to be a replica, rather a right-handed guitar that has all the features that made Hendrix' guitars tonally different from stock late 60s strats, like the different string tension from the reverse stock and the reversed bridge pickup. I think they are a very cool guitar.

I love firebirds too, though. Both would be the best option, but if you can't stretch that, I guess you have to figure out what kind of tone you're after.

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

I'd keep the Firebird. They look and sound cooler, at least in my hands.

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

I'm a Strat guy, but I would keep the Firebird.

You could build your own Voodoocaster relatively easily.

What the hell are you talking about Dude? you know a strat is always the right choice!

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

Thanks for the answers guys. Well as it turns out the trade is off anyway cause the guy with the voodoocaster needed the money more than the bird. Which is probably as good cause that stopped me from possibly doin something I would have regreted.

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

do what jimi did, buy a stock strat and just do the mods yourself, maybe a set of antiquity strat pups...

even get a left-handed one and change everything round, so the bridge pickup alignment is out, like the man himself did!

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

I never really took to a Firebird (and I really love the way it looks, so I wanted to). You have to ask yourself "tonally, what am I looking for"? Both are very different beasts. Thick, warm and mellow is what comes to mind when I think of the Firebird, sparkling, thin and articulate is what comes to mind when I think of a strat.

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

I'd stay away from Fender's "hey buy this weird guitar, because we put someone's name on it" marketing ploy. Hearing anybody try to play hendrix through a "voodoocaster" I'm sure wil not at all sound different from someone who try's to play hendrix through and decent strat. I don't think the voodoocaster is going to gain any value at all. It's silly IMHO. I think that firebird has class. I'm sure if you asked hendrix he wouldn't want some sill backwards celebrity knock-off! He'd go for the firebird too!

Re: Gibson Firebird vs J.Hendrix Voodoocaster

Well, I dig the firebird. But I don't really know what I'm looking for. Right now I'm playing a firebird but I'm really very open to other sounds. That's why I concidered the Voodoocaster.

You might want to look into something w/t a full size Humbucker. DON'T
TRADE that Bird!! you'll regret it. The Firebird was Gibson's Idea of
makeing a Stratocaster.(that's why all the reverse ,non reverse bird's
from the 60's) ledgend has it that when CBS bought fender they where
going to sue Gibson? I own a Firebird and I've always thought of it as
sounding more like a Strat. it doesn't have the Chime a good Strat has
but with some OD it sounds like a pissed off Strat. :laugh2: Just listen
to Johnny winter's 70's tone. Or Allen Collens Freebird Solo.
