Re: Gibson Gold covered 498T...whats under the cover?...expecting to deal with wax...

I just popped open my '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus pickups last night last night (they were nickel covered). The wax was the same as I've seen on Duncans: a little cleaning required, but not overdone. The Epiphone pickups I popped open on the other hand were more wax than pickup! But the Gibsons were both double-black and looked like most humbuckers. The only thing I didn't like was the use of paper tape on the bobbins instead of cloth tape. But that is easily fixed. As far as clean-up, I have not attempted that yet. I would think using a soft-cloth like an old t-shirt would take the excess off quite nicely.

Almost all American-made HB's have very little wax in them, no more than necessary (I've opened up many PU's over the years). In Asia they sometimes get carried away and under the cover some look like a bar of soap.

i have asian humbucker that, has a cover on it that i would love to take off. The sucker does not feedback at all even after i set the hell loose with gain, so i m expecting the aforementioned soapbar wax under the cover. what are the best ways to get all excess wax melted to remove the cover without damaging the pickup.

I use a small flathead screwdriver, the wax comes off in chunks of various sizes.
