Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

I need either a Gibson Les Paul Standard or a Heritage H-150 (well, maybe I don't "need" one but y'know how it goes). I always hear about the QC issues with Gibson but having only had the one I inherited from my step father, I don't actually know first hand.

Thoughts/input from those who know?

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

What exactly is your question? I bought all five of my Gibson Les Pauls off of Ebay and I've never had any problems with any of them.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

I bought a total of 3 Les Paul's in my life off eBay and didn't have issues with any of them. 2 of them were outstanding instruments and one was above average. I think if you watch who you buy from making sure they have good feedback history and perhaps use paypal to help if you have any disputes, you should be just fine. If you happen to get a guitar that just doesn't feel right to you, you can turn around and sell it right away.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Just bought a sapphire jem studio, yeah a cheap LP, but it is still worth any three or four epiphones lps Ive ever played and the studio will last years longer than any of them [imho].......do it.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

Be careful a good deal Les Paul on the bay is almost certainly had a head break.

In the past I've tried to refrain from quoting you and telling you you're 100% ass backwards in every single gear opinion you've posted on here, but it's time. You have no idea what the hell you're talking about....ever....ever. Every single one of your gear opinions is 180 degrees opposite of the truth. I'm not trying to be a dikk, but every single gear post I've ever seen you make is absolutely opposite of reality.

You would be best off completely shutting your mouth and opening your ears.

You've made it abundantly clear that you hate Gibson guitars, and it gets tiring to hear, especially since everything you say about Gibson couldn't be further from the truth.

I've been thinking the same thing, for too long, to keep believing that it's just my imagination.

The big challenge for me is finding one that feels right. The necks just feel to round to me. I highly recommend going into a store and playing as many as you can get your hands on. Then decide. Don't be to picky about how it is setup(most are usually setup poorly). When I bought my standard I was in the shop with a friend picking up his acoustic guitar. While he was talking to the sales guy I pulled it down and started playing it and brought it home. That was 20 years ago, today there are a lot more options as to what colors, necks, pickups..... it can be overwhelming. Just go in and play..... one will speak to you!

I hit Guitar Center yesterday to do just this.....I forgot all about the 50's vs. 60's necks. That would've been an "oops".

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

As for the OP - exactly what Qc issues are you worried about? I agree - it's tragic that for $2k+ they can't get the binding right or whatever. But if I were buying used, I 'd have way more tolerance for such things.

Remember - you can ask for detailed pics. I'd (likely) never spend that much money on a guitar I couldn't personally touch/inspect/hear. But that's your choice. If you just need something that LOOKS like that and are willing to spend over a grand just for that....can't help you.

But I will agree that I have three real Gibsons, and not a thing wrong with any of them.

As for you:
#1 Pics or it doesn't exist

#2 What's wrong with Gem series? P-90 goodness, cool colors, and all the key LP ingredients...

Absolutely. I'm starting to think either Orville Gibson beat him up in school or it's some form of internet Tourette's.

Ouch.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

I'm naturally leary about spending a thousand dollars or more on an item that I cannot verify in person. Given that, if the seller has a high rating and a documented return policy then I would be slightly less apprehensious. You do have some degree of protection through Ebay and Paypal.

We live in the same neighborhood, there are plenty of stores around that may have what you're looking for, used or new. I would go that route first if you're concerned about getting something you won't like online.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

I've bought plenty of guitars including several Les Pauls via eBay (zero broken headstocks by the way) If you use common sense and buy from an established seller with adequate positive feedback and plenty of clear photos of the goods you should have no issues, plus you're "buyer protected" through eBay. Bottom line: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Watch out for fakes, if you're not sure, ask opinions before you buy.........The only bad experiences I've had are sellers selling something they don't know much about. "Oh sure, It's a 60's slim taper neck" (which I love) only to find its a fat 50's neck..........

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard off Ebay?

See? Just take what you said and reverse it 180 degrees. So instead of 99 out of 100 good deals on Gibsons having a headstock repair, it would actually be closer to 1 out of 100.

Look, I'm not trying to bust your chops, although my post did come off as harsh, but your biases and opinions aren't rooted in any facts. That's how internet myths get started.

Sorry but this is a fact. Gibson guitars are prone to head break. This isn't a myth but a fact. Rooted in fact. Anyone who knows anything about Guitar design knows that the sharp angle and large truss rod cavity make for a very weak transition. It is a real genuine problem. I know Gibson lovers like to flame people who point this out but I hate to see people getting ripped off and if you are looking into buying a Gibson from e-bay and dodgy broken head is a real danger.

I'm guessing the reason there are so many Gibson fans on here is that most people get fecked off with them flaming every time someone says something that goes against the gospel of Gibson.
