i'm thinking about making my gibson les paul with dimarzio pickups active w/ some seymour duncan blackout pre-amp mods. if it can be done , i'd like to find out exactly what to do. the neck pup is a 36th anniversery paf and i have a tone zone in the bridge. the guitar sounds awesome but, i'm a fella always looking to do different s#!t to my guitars. it's currently setup w/500k gibson potentiometers and russian military paper in oil 0.022uF capaciters@630v. i've seen all the promos for pre-amp mods and, i'd like to give them a shot. it sounds to me like a challenge mashing up 3 great AMERICAN companies in one fun project! :usa:

I have played around a lot with a couple of BMP's and I know, to my ears, your proposed project would be a disappointment. One of the members here blacked out a JBb & 59n and said it was too loose and boomy. He eventually went on to lower output, high clarity pups and was much happier. I thought, okay I know it's the same wind, but my Duncan Dist (w/it's big ole ceramic mag) does a much better job at staying tight. Nope, still too much mud for me. He was right, the bmp really shines w/bright, low to medium powered models. Now, to me, the TZ has to be in the right application or it can get wooly...and that's just str8 passive w/500k pot. 'Just my $.02. I realize your ears, and what you're after, could be completely different than mine.

Yep, I remember that thread but I can't seem to find it now. He tried to find perfect pickup matches to use in place of the bmp coil pack. Ended up with Humbucker from Hell in the neck and I don't remember what in the bridge...maybe duncan distortion neck? Basically, you need very thin sounding pickups to avoid the mud. This was very helpful! I almost bought a bmp for my detonator! That probably would have been trouble.
