Gibson LP

Hey! new here. Ok at the moment im playing a Greg Bennet Interceptor (Samick) and Im looking for a new guitar cos its really unreliable/nasty to play. Didnt really know what i was looking for when i bought it, so Im now looking for a really decent guitar that'll last me a while. I'd really like a Gibson Les Paul standard or studio, because i love the quality of the sound, and they're well known for being good guitars.
If anyone has one, could you let me know what you think of it? Worth it? Overrated? I'd like to know cos Im willing to spend some cash, but i dont want to waste it.
cheers :)

Re: Gibson LP

Welcome to the SD Forum!!:)

They're worth it to me and I love mine. I don't think they're overated at all. All of my Gibsons are Les Paul Classics though and not Standards. What exactly are you wanting to know about them?

Hi J_M_R,

Firstly welcome to the forum and hope that you stick around as there are a lot of people on here who will give you good advice and help you along as well. The merits of LP standards/studios have been done to death on this forum and you may well find the following threads useful.

https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=4542

https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=4669

However it may be useful if you could tell us what sort of amps, music and cash etc that you are into and we can then all give you some ideas and totally confuse you altogether!!.

No doubt the other guys will all start posting (if they have not already) and you will find that you will soon be addictive to this place and we are all friendly and really lovable guys (well I am!!)

Re: Gibson LP

As a proud owner of an LP standard, I must say that it is the guitar that I feel is the best electric that I have and that I always reach for. I also think that a Gibby is a great investment as far as today's market goes, as they hold their value well. The only bad thing that I can think of is that they are not often set up well at the factory, and need a professional setup to reach their maximum potential (but that applies to most guitars off the rack).

With that said, give one a try and see how you like it. In fact, go to a few stores and try a lot of them. See what speaks to you. And let us know what you decide on! Welcome to the forums.

Re: Gibson LP

I never thought I would buy a Gibson so I spent a lot of time on copies and many are great....but none felt as prerfect to me as the LP. I bought a 2003 LP Standard that is only a little over 8 lbs but I fell for it after spending much store hours playing this baby. You'll know right away when you connect with one. Mine felt great right out of the store and that was a big reason i bought it. It felt like it got extra special attention. :)

Re: Gibson LP

I have a '90 LP Standard. All black with a rosewood board. It is a great guitar, as others have already said. Go play a bunch, find one that feels and plays good, than have it setup to your liking and you will love it!!!! and Welcome!!!

How's this?

Bet it sounded like a strat when he was playing it though! that guy sounded like himself no matter what he played. I saw that unplugged gig he did with a 12 string accousting that was amazing!

That's why I'm a firm believer in "it ain't the axe, it's the guy choppin' the tree."

Re: Gibson LP

LP's are great if you can afford one, might think about a Epi LP first. TexasGuitarSlinger is 100% right, it dont matter if your playin a 100 dollar Squier or a 3500 dollar Zakk Wylde Les Paul if you aint got the chopps !

Re: Gibson LP

It's an arguable topic, but here's my advise. Over the next several years,
aquire these, and consider yourself "done."

Gibson Les Paul Standard

Fender Stratocaster

Fender Telecaster

A Floyd Rose Equipped guitar (depending on your style, of course)

A Martin or Taylor Acoustic Guitar

A Marshall, or equivalent, depending on your gainy needs.

A Fender Combo for Cleans.

Do this, and all your bases will be covered. Then, of course, you'll turn
into a gear junkie, and require far more. Click on "my gear"
and you'll see the end result of that disease. :laugh2:

Re: Gibson LP

I've never owned a Gibson, but I'm on the verge of buying one this week if all goes well: a Les Paul Studio. My advice would be to try as many as you can to find the one that feels just right. I tried 6 of the L.P. Studios at the music store that I go to and found the one that feels like home. So comfortable. Good luck.
