Gibson Melody Maker, why so cheap?

This guitar, $529 list, $349 retail at MF, seems to be very similar to the LP Junior $1168 list, $749 retail at MF, which costs more than twice as much. Anyone know what the main differences are? http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Les-Paul-Melody-Maker-Electric-Guitar?sku=512640

Much different guitars.

The MM has a thinner body, generally 3pc as opposed a normal 2 piece on the regular production Jr., different pickup, completely top routed, small headstock, simpler finishing.

I see the head is a little narrower and the pickup is different, I think Joan Jett uses a melody maker.

Seems to be a double cut version with a humbucker.

Well the single coil pup isn't really anything like a P-90, if you put a P-90 in I am guessing they'd be pretty damn close. The stock MM pickup sounds a bit more Tele than P-90.

Aren't the necks or neck profiles slightly different?
