Gibson midtown custom?

So I've really been interested in one of these, but haven't found one to actually play yet. Has anyone had some hands on experience with them? They seem ideal for me. I love semi's, but I hate swapping pups in them. This guitar makes it easy with the access panel. Also I really like the flat top of it. Although, I hear that it's more along 339 size and I rather the big huge bodies, and although I don't like saying the words "richlite fretboard" if it sounds good I don't care what it is.

Do these things really sound like a cross between a semi and a les Paul? I never got along with les pauls for some reason, but I could really use that sound. In my mind this thing is sort of like a big sg.

My other options that I'm looking at are also the bb king Lucile and the Kurt cobain jaguar, or possibly a tele. I know, complete different sounds. I'm looking more for versatility in my arsenal, and these are all tones I have yet to cover

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I've had several at my shop...all have been good.

Size is between a 335 and 339... tone is like a chambered Les Paul. Nobody knows its richlite. Go buy one.

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I played a standard model that was an absolute hot, stinking turd! Havent played the Custom.

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I played a couple Midtowns at GC and I immediately liked them. It was a little less woody and hollow sounding than a 335 but still still had some of that semi hollow tone.
As far as the Richlite boards, I doubt you'll ever know the difference in feel or sound. It does look different though. There is no grain so to me it doesn't look like wood but this really doesn't bother me. I do have this guitar on my radar but I'm waiting til' some come on the used market.

Well being that I've heard mostly positive things, it seems that it's worth it to track down one to play myself. I haven't been able to find any customs, but a couple standards. They share the same neck shape, correct?

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I have a 359 & a 335. If I had to choose which I like better I would always pick the 335. It just feels right in my hands. That typed my 359 is a wonderful guitar. It has a more open flavor to its tone by comparison to a Les Paul. Its also a lot lighter which is one of my pet peeves about Les Pauls is they are so heavy. That said I have never really played a midtown, but I have to believe its got to sound very close to my 359. Go buy one you will love it!

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I played one at GC and it was freaking awesome. It felt way more expensive than it was, IMO. Quite honestly it slipped my mind that it was a richlite board when I was playing it. If I had the money at the time I probably would have bought it, but I was broke as a joke at the time.

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I played a Custom at GC near me.

I thought it played and sounded awesome thru a Mini Recto.

The price was right too. I'd pick one up if I had the money.

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

Good to hear it sounds awesome with a mini recto. I know it's not exactly the same amp, but atleast in my head that means it should slay through my dual haha

Re: Gibson midtown custom?

I played one at a local GC. It looked cool as as all hell so I wanted to like it but...

I was not impressed. Sloppy workmanship, neck/top geometry was awkward...just not a well built or designed instrument IMO. Make sure you play one before buying one.
