Gibson "new century" Explorer

I purchased a used Gibson new century explorer. I know very little about the guitar other than it has a carbon fiber face and gibson 496r and 500t pickups. I play hard rock and metal and the pickups sound good but I would love to hear the new SD Gus G pickups in it. The only problem is that If I use active pickups I have to take off the entire faceplate to replace the battery which is a really big hassle. I don't want to route a battery compartment out and ruin the integrity of the guitar. I heard that there are other external ways to power active pickups. Is this true? If so how? And I was also wondering if PU covers would work well or if they would take away from the tone of the PU?

Re: Gibson "new century" Explorer

The cavity for the pots would have be super small to need new routing to fit a battery, highly unlikely. Anyways I think EMG came up with an external power thingy for their active pups, not really sure if they work with BOs tho.

Re: Gibson "new century" Explorer

I will have to look into that. The guitar is really cool but instead of a small pick guard the whole face is carbon fiber and has nearly a dozen screws holding it on so it makes it a hassle to remove. I guess they only made a run of 400 of them in 2007. You know anyone that has tried the new Gus g PUs?

Re: Gibson "new century" Explorer

Congrats! I'd really love to have one of the mirror-faced ones! It'd be hard not to replace the mirror with an gold anodized-aluminum face, though!

Is there no back door for the control cavity?

There is no back door everything is going through the front. So the only way to get to anything is to remove the faceplate

Re: Gibson "new century" Explorer

I'm thinking you could possibly run the battery connector out through the output jack plate side, possibly putting some grooves in it to prevent crushing the wires and inadvertently linking the 2 battery wiles together, get a small project box to keep the connected battery in and hang it off of your strap button or wherever else you think it'd be safe. Might have to do a little wire splicing but should give you the desired effect in the end.

You could Phantom Power it. There's a few ways of doing it.
Here's one. It needs a stereo jack socket in your guitar and a two core cable.
