Gibson Pickups

Re: Gibson Pickups

Same reason their overpriced guitars are soooo expensive....name.

But don't be fooled, It has nothing to do with quality. (Not saying they aren't good quality, just that some pups at half the cost are equal or better quality).

Re: Gibson Pickups

Yes I understand I am paying for that name. But honestly it is too expensive I can actually get 2 Duncans, dimarzios ( at least many of them)for the price of one Gibson pickup. I have not played a gibson pickup to be very honest, but looking at how many people at least on this forum change their stock Gibson Pickups honestly makes me think it is way overprized.

Re: Gibson Pickups

Depends on where you look ;)
I'm importing mine from a German dealer for almost half the price
they go for here in Sweden ;)

Re: Gibson Pickups

Sometimes you can only get what you really want from a particular brand. IMO there is no other pup exactly like a Dirty Fingers. You can only get it made by Gibson. I love that pup for what it does and don't regret the cost. I also love the Gibson firebird mini hums. But I haven't tried Seymour's...maybe his are even better.

But all other pups, I find my needs met with Duncans.

Re: Gibson Pickups

They sell pretty cheap used. They're all pretty good, with the right magnet choices. Unfortunately, the magnets they come with stock are usually not the right choice.

Still there are other brands better-sounding.

Gibson could never make any REALLY good-sounding p'up since the PAF.

Re: Gibson Pickups

Yeah, at around $100 Gibson is way over charging. Much less reasonable than yet another set of "authentic" $500 PAF copies some guy makes in his basement.

Re: Gibson Pickups

They're decent, but horribly overpriced IMO. Who actually buys them for the asking prices?

Still, I tend to pick them up if they come along for a good price. I've got no problems with their tone, and I still think they make one of the best P90's out there.

Re: Gibson Pickups

I don't buy ANY pickup at the asking price. Why would you? I guess if you need a very specific feature (red bobbins, gold covers, etc) you might buy at retail, but with ebay and these types of forums there is no need.

With that said, Gibson pickups tend to go for $50 - 60 on the used market, which is in-line with Duncan. Dimarzios are a bit cheaper.

Re: Gibson Pickups

By the way... just a quick internet search...

Duncan '59 double-black and Zebra NEW are $72.99
Duncan '59 nickel NEW is $75

Gibson 490t zebra NEW is $79.95
Gibson 490t nickel NEW is $85
Gibson 490t double-black is $85

So, while Gibson is more expensive, in this example it is less that $10 - 15

Re: Gibson Pickups

Bought a new DF 3-4 months ago ... $97
ordered a double black 490R yesterday to go
with it ... $81 ... I don't think it's that expensive :O

Re: Gibson Pickups

It doesn't necessarily have to be unjustified. They might just have to spend more money in making them.

Like for lawyers, disgruntled employee defense, wood trafficing, making fancy pages and videos explaining why plastic and plywood are better fingerboards and the like :)

In the future I will try one of their pups out. These prices seem reasonable since I know others sell for much higher price.

...and the 490 set also happens to be my favorite Gibson humbucker set. Certain Gibson pickups really are good for the money.

Re: Gibson Pickups

This is a strange thread...They might cost more than a Duncan Or a Dimarzio but not that much more.

As for the tone that's all subjective...I really like some Gibson pickups and I dislike some as well...I like a lot of Duncans and I dislike some too...
