Gibson sg special vs sg standard

I'm looking to get a new Sg. I've been playing a friends faded for a while and really like it, but desire something a little nicer feeling.

Seeing as I'm too busy with college and work to drive around and try them out, I came here: which guitar is better? Better playibility,
clearer tone, higher output? Overall value?

Re: Gibson sg special vs sg standard

For all intents and purposes they're the same guitar except the Standard gets better / fewer pieces of wood, covered pickups, trapezoid inlays and binding.

Re: Gibson sg special vs sg standard

If you can locate a "real" SG Special with the P-90's versus humbuckers, you might like that. They really kick a$$. Failing that, go with the Standard. You'll be much happier with that than getting the current version of the Special.

I have a one piece special, and after a pu transplant, is my fav/#1 guitar !

Is "the current version of the Special" still called the "SG Special"?

Re: Gibson sg special vs sg standard

As an SG Special owner for nearly 15 years, I can honestly say I wish I bought a Std instead.

That's the called the SG Classic now. You can find them under a 1,000 all day long used.

The fret edge binding can hide some lousy fretwork if it is present :)

But what they said, definitely random. Gibson specifies that a SG std is made of 2 pieces in the body but stds with more pieces pop up.

I recall seeing people on forums buying SG specials that happen to be exceptionally nice when playing them in a shop.

Myself, I mainly bought the SG std I have based on it having an ABR-1 bridge and what appears to be a one-piece body. Not to mention I got it at a fair price.

+2 ! The Standard is sooo much nicer feeling, nice chunky neck... just like an SG should be. Or if you want a slightly cheaper alternative to the SG Standard, you could go with the SG Classic (with P-90's) It has a nice bound neck, and has a better feel than the SG Specials.

Re: Gibson sg special vs sg standard

The nice thing about the Classic is the bound neck. I'd probably go '61 RI, Std, Classic, then Special - and entirely skip any of those "faded" junkers.
