Gibson SG special

I was wondering if anyone had any feedback or reviews on this guitar. I am thinking of buying one and any help would be appreciated.

look at some other brands like esp or schecters....or even agile....although i don't think the resale value will be higher than the sg special... but you'll be getting a better guitar imo...

I picked up the wine red SG Special around 7 months ago and I'm extremely happy with. I dropped in the Tone Pros bridge and the JB/'59 pups. It's a great sounding and very playable guitar that's reasonably priced. I will add that I'm not crazy about the faded series.

Have you considered an Epiphone Elitist?
Or An ESP or schecter?
Agile's are also worth a mention.

Play 'em all.
Pick the one that speaks to you.
For you will not fall.
With one that speaks your language.
However, All buy a new, one day.
And they pay; the price.

Thanks Guys! I going to sam ash on saturday and im going to play all of the guitars that i am considering, but the SG is on the top of my list.

the sg was on the top of my list as well, until i played what i now my esp ec-1000. imo, looks better with the nice amber color, great friggin top, plays very well, comes with stock duncans, and can be had for less than the sg.

a couple things.

no faded's... stay away.

the sg spl's are a great working mans SG .. bare bones but extremely usable. think needle in a haystack tho ... play as many of them as you can. and look closely at the inlay/fretwork.

The neck's are a beefy rounded '59.. so if you like a smaller neck look into a std or a 61 RI.

Please note: for the price of a new spl you can buy a used std.

food for thought..

I'm not going to tell you cause the Red Sox kick Yankees ass.

Re: Gibson SG special

You could go for a copy, but in the end the Gibson will sound like a Gibson and the copies will sound like the copies. You won't get the Gibson sound and mojo out of something else. SG Specials are good guitars, but I wouldn't buy one brand new since they tend to cost too much. You can find plenty of good deals for them on eBay.

If you absolutely must buy it new, shop around first.

I'd love an SG with P90's. Can you get them on a tight budget?

Ya i love SG's with P90's too! There is a new model called the SG Classic and it has 2 P90's... here in Canada it is not bad as far as price.... about $1100 Canadian

But if you are on a much tighter budget and want p90's look at the Godin LG with Duncan P90's........ www.godinguitars.com

The real SG Specials came with P-90's, and IMO were so much better. Listen to Santana at Woodstock. Those Sg's used to scream like they werer being whipped :laugh2:

The new ones with the humbuckers don't impress me. Gibson did reissue the P-90 version for a while, but they might be expensive.

You're absolutely right. And Townshend at Woodstock.... the best SG Special player ever. Listen to "Magic Bus" Live at Leeds version and listen to the tone he gets out of that thing. Quite an addictive song.

I agree with Townsend on "Live at Leeds". The other guy I always associate with the Special is Mick Abrahamson from early Jethro Tull. His tone and playing on "Cat's Squirrel" was otherworldly.
