Gibson SG, Want something more responsive to pull offs...

I recieved my SG standard about 3 days ago and I like it alot. I started learning some Iron Maiden songs and relized that my bridge pickup wasnt giving me very good response to pull offs ect. I was wondering what SD pickup would let this guitar shine nicely, and would give me the output I needed without destroying clean tone and the natural bite of the SG. Thanks in advance for all of your wisdom..

Never tried one in an SG, but I like the JB for what you've described.

Does the JB allow the guitar to still shine though? i dont want a pickup that completely hides the guitar.. Thanks for the quick response..If somone has put one in thier SG please tell me your expierences with it. Also how is the clean with the JB?

In a Gibson, I like the Custom way better than the JB. I've tried both in my LP, and the JB did cover up too much of the guitar's sound.

Kyle, there is always the Gibson Tony Iommi Signature model! This pickup is not a harmonics generating monster, but it does do pull-offs without all those extra incidental squeek/plink/scrooch/ploink noises. This pickup is not a good choice for Zakk Wylde styles.

And yes...this pickup allows the thrust/bite of the SG tone to shine through. The Master, Iommi would not have it any other way.

+ 1 on the custom series, although i prefer the custom w/ the al5 mag on an sg.....have a custom5 sh14 bridge and a 59neck on mine

Kyle, I needed to add in my post above that yes, I do love the Gibson Iommi...but this very instant, I am looking for a replacement bridge pickup for my 335-S which has a mahogany body/neck as does the SG. The sh5 Custom is near the top of the short list. I am not aware of any SG/JB combos that people have raved about.

The magic of the JB comes to life in a dark slab of mahogany. I really liked it in my SG-X. That was an unusually dark guitar though.

Thanks for all of the comments everyone. I have been listening to the sound clips ect. and also thinking about your advice. I believe I am going to go with a sh5 custom in the bridge with a sh1-59 in the neck. Does this sound like a good choice for my SG? The reason I was wanting the sh5 is because i think it will give me more low end than the JB, and hopefully it will perform ok in clean.

All this pickup talk is maddeningly tedious when trying to pick a jewel of a pickup. I love high gain pickups/high gain amps, and the SH6 Duncan Distortion would sound like an obvious choice...but...The tone clips of the SH6 Duncan Distortion compared to the SH5 Duncan Custom reveal a cleaner mid, and a more percussive quality with rapid low-string rythm drives with the SH5. I have always liked the darker end of the spectrum, so a JB is not my field of vision, regardless of all the memorable music made with it.

The neck pickup is so hard to choose. I will probably go with the APH-1 for its less bass-y-ness...and hope that the combo will work nicely together (this always seems to be a real cr@pshoot).

I would like to add that regardless of the Seymour Duncan pickup you choose, Seymour has a guarantee of sorts, but the only place I ever see it proudly displayed is here. I have never dealt with this retailer. Scroll down to the bottom of the linked page:

Thanks for the link. Do you think the SH5 will allow me to play pull offs with out all of the extra dings and crap sounds that usually some with them? also does the sh5 perform well using clean (i know the clip sounds good but...). My bridge pickup on my sg sounds like poop when using clean.

I wish I could help you, but I do not have actual experience with the SH5. Also, I care about the clean tone only about 3% of the time (I am a dork, lifelong stoner rocker :eek13:), and I only listen to the "dirty" samples.

I just hope the linky provides a dealer that is straight-up.

edit: Ooops! This retailer does not mention the various bobbin color combos available. Other retailers might. Make sure that any dealer you use is aware of Seymour's warranty, and they are an Authorized Dealer.
