Giffin Guitars!

Mr 9finger

Digitally Challenged
This guy makes some beautiful guitars! Found them while killing myself on Wilcutts website. I think I might order a Model T in black Limba when tax time comes!

Re: Giffin Guitars!

Didn't he make a couple of Strats for Clapton back in the 70/80's???
Gorgeous guitars either way.

Re: Giffin Guitars!

That single-p90 one looks really good... A little more LPjunior like and I'd dream of it all night man...

Re: Giffin Guitars!

a while back I thought I had purchased a model T at a killer price but the seller backed out of the deal

Re: Giffin Guitars!

a long time ago i contacted him to make me a Pete Townshend style tele like he did for Pete in 1980... Some of Pete's teles were Shecter parts guitars and some were whatever parts Giffin could find... Most of the Giffin made Teles were easy to spot as they were double bound and some or most had Giffin on the headstock instead of Shecter...

anyways when i emailed him he wrote back and suggested i try Warmoth parts because a lot of the Tele bodies and necks he used for Pete were from Boogie Bodies... he also said at the time since he had once worked for Fender he would not make any Fender copies anymore... not sure if he stuck to that or not

Re: Giffin Guitars!

When I bought the body and neck for the guitar below, the guy I bought it off said it was a Roger Giffin body from the 80s. I'd never heard of Giffin before, so I looked into his history and found out he'd built guitars for Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton and (I think) Mark Knopfler aswell as alot of others.

His new range of guitars look very nice, but waaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range :D

Re: Giffin Guitars!

The more I look at the Model T series, the more I think come tax time, I'll get one. I really REALLY dig them! Still kicking some specs around in my head for the time being though. They are pretty pricey, but a lot less pricey than getting a Private Stock PRS for me, and they have a lot of similar features.

Re: Giffin Guitars!

I seem to remember the ones built for Clapton had a lot of lacquer checking on the finish. They'd beed built in a rush for Eric to use on tour and weren't allowed to dry properly. He had a blue one in an open tuning for Tulsa Time I think.

Re: Giffin Guitars!

Roger and I have been trading emails the last couple days. Me bouncing spec ideas off him and so on. So far the specs I've came up with are,

Black Limba body and Lam. neck w/ maple stripes.
Macassar Ebony fretboard
22 Extra Jumbo frets (6100's)
Zebra Seymour Antiquity Hum at the bridge
Black Seymour Antiquity P90 at the neck
Black Hardware
Haven't decided on a bridge or a fretboard radius. It will be one of the following
TonePros wrapround w/ a 12"
Tune O matic/string through body w/ a 12"
Mooretone Alum. Vintage style trem w/ a 14"
or lastly, Hipshot contour trem w/ a 14"
Tuners, I said were up to him as long as they are non locking.
Still up in the air on fretboard inlays as well, Here's the 2 I've picked w/ an alt. Explain the Alt. in a moment.

Option 1 - Birds of Prey

Option 2

Option 3

Option 3 is in case PRS wants to throw a Gibby fit about having copyrighted the bird inlays on their guitars. Only thing is, niether of the bird inlays I've picked out are exactly like the PRS birds, but there is some likeness. So just playing it safe.

That's about it spec wise. Once I figured out the rest for exactly what I want, it'll just be waiting on tax time to get here!
