'54 three pup sg? what do you actually have? does it have humbuckers? lp shape or sg shape?

Sorry, X wanna be Rock Star....The life style without the success... My mistake.... 1961 Re-Issue... Les Paul custom SG body style Three pick-ups

Re: Give me the Sound I deserve>>>>

The only sound you deserve is the one you work to coax out of the instrument. Now that the condescending and unhelpful answer is out of the way, I can recommend that you put a humbucker sized p90 in the middle. A standard humbucker doesn't really have a good tone for the middle position.

What genres do you listen to, what tones do you want to emulate, and what amp/cabinet do you have?

Knowing nothing about your rig or preferences, I can say a Sentient neck, Mean 90 middle, and 59/Custom Hybrid bridge is an amazing set.

Thank you for the reply, I never thought of that, that middle pick_up is out of phase and sound's like crap. I might give that a try...

Re: Give me the Sound I deserve>>>>

If you can score a vintage Dirty Fingers from the early 60's it would be money in the middle spot.

That'll might turn into quite a difficult task... specially considering that the DFs were created in the mid/late '70s. ;)

For the record: I actually own one of the original ones, taken from a 1978 Explorer. PM me if interested in the acquisition.

Gunna need more info...what you like to play, what your rig is, and knowing what pickups are in there now is really gunna help since that's the starting point.

Re: Give me the Sound I deserve>>>>

Still, we need to know what sound you want, and (other than the middle being out of phase), what you don't like about the current pickups.

Re: Give me the Sound I deserve>>>>

My hhh strat has a Seth neck, Phat Cat middle, and JB bridge. It's insane and suitable for many styles.

Re: Give me the Sound I deserve>>>>

is the middle pup out of phase? not on the ones ive played. are these the stock pups?

i dont love three pup gibsons for a variety of reasons but plenty of people do. the three way switch gives you 1-neck 2-bridge+middle 3-bridge. the bridge middle combo never really does much for me. id wire it with three volume controls and the 3way as on a two pup gibson 1-neck 2-neck+bridge 3-bridge. with the volume control you could bring the middle pup in on any selection of the switch. personally id rather have the middle pup in phase but this would work either way. a phat cat in the middle (bucker size p90) is a cool option

This thread broken.

Sorry I don't have anything helpful to add here. But like the p90 suggestion for middle. Generally singles work fine there.

So you missed the joke then. Since his SG Custom was nearly a decade early I figured he deserved a similar pickup.

I believe the '61 reissues have '57 Classic pickups in them, at least through most of the 2000's. (Newer ones might have something better.)

To hear what a '61 could/should sound like I might put an Antiquity bridge and Seth necks in the middle and neck, if it were mine.

I've found 3-pickup Gibsons sound awesome when using truer-to-vintage construction/spec pickups and wiring. Doesn't have to be nerd-cork-sniffing-exact, just better than stock Gibson stuff.

A more rock and roll variant would be a Whole Lotta Humbucker bridge and WLH necks in the middle and neck positions.

Slightly cheaper alternate might be a Pearly Gates bridge and Jazz necks in the middle and neck position.

Another alternate could be 59/Custom Hybrid bridge with 59 Necks modded with A4 magnets for both middle and neck positions, or 59N modded with A3 for the middle and 59N modded with A4 for the neck. Another option to try is Alnico 2 Pro bridge with A2P necks in the middle and neck, or Jazz necks in the middle and neck.

I say all of the above making two assumptions:
1. Keeping the stock switching
2. The goal is a better or more accurate '61 SG (not some modern customized monster)
