Going 7 string! what pickups though?

Im used to play 6 drop c but now im going to buy a really nice 7 string guitar! thinking of an ibanez j custom... Ive played 7 strings a bunch but I have never experimented with pickups on them... I know the nazgul and black winter are good 7 string options... any others? I play technical death metal/death metal/melodic death metal.... Anything heavy... I like my high strings to not sound overly piercing but I want the low strings to be extremely tight and crunchy sounding... with some grind for trem picking...

I'm my opinion, the Black Winters are your best bet. They've got a nice snarl to them, great articulation, and a good full sound that doesn't go off the deep end with either the highs or lows. Also way more versatile than they get credit for. They clean up very nicely (the Nazgul not so much). The Nazgul is a mean little pickup though, has a tight low end that holds together at low tunings, but also has a piercing high end you'll have to figure out how to tame.

If you're getting a J Custom try the stock pickups before you think about what pickup you're going to install.. not to mention you want to hear how the guitar sounds before you shop for replacements. :D

I have the Crunchlab/Liquifire in my EBMM 7 string and I like them a lot. I thought about going to a Nazgul/Sentinent, but really don't think I need to.

what about bareknuckle c bomb? have the a bomb in a drop c guitar, can get abit muddy, would a cbomb clear it up? or maybe miracle man

they come with paf7s, ive already tried em, altho brief Ive never ever liked dimarzios

Re: Going 7 string! what pickups though?

I've only ever had a single 7 before I passed it on, however, it was a 99 BC Rich, so of course it came with Dimarzio Blaze pups because that was pretty much what went in everything back then. I few years later, I managed to get a C7/Jazz7 set and it was like a different guitar. There are plenty of fantastic pickups out there that lend their character to the odd tonality of a 7, very well.

They didn't make my fingers any longer, however.

I would suggest the Black Winter Set or the Nazgul/Sentient set for those tones-. Go with the Winters if all you do is heavy. Go with the Nazgul/Sentient if you use the neck pickup for cleans once in awhile.

c7 im not surprised, did it have a ceramic mag in it? I like the custom series, but I think they are a little too low output for me

Re: Going 7 string! what pickups though?

lmao wouldnt it be the other way around, the black winters are extremely versatile from what I hear...

The Black Winter neck is supposed to be higher output than the Sentient.

Re: Going 7 string! what pickups though?

Well, both sets can be versatile...and the Winters sound good clean, they just excel at heavy.

The Nazgul is not very versatile though, IME. Though for death metal and the like, I would probably go Nazgul myself. (I own a nazgul 6 and 7. I do not own a sentient in either configuration or BW7)
