I recently installed a brushed gold EMG 57/66 pickup set in a newly acquired Les Paul Custom copy. Why? Because in my head black Les Paul Customs have gold pickups and that's that.
The EMGs look the part, they certainly deliver a kick-ass rock tone, but if i'm going to be honest, for my tastes, i'm not convinced they're an overall upgrade from the Dimarzio humbuckers that were in there first (Bridge: Super Distortion, Neck: PAF Pro). The Dimarzios seemed to dig a little more mojo out of the guitar (especially at lower gain - my wheelhouse), with the middle position delivering an absolutely ripping rockabilly and/or surf tone that I wasn't expecting at all.
So i'm starting the search for a compromise set of humbuckers - not quite as hot or tight as the EMGs, not plain black like the Dimarzios.
If you absolutely wanted gold-covered humbuckers in your Les Paul, what option would you choose?
