They're singles, wired parallel as far as I am aware.

I know they are single coils but i was wondering if there were any old guitars that had these wired with the middle position in series like lipsticks for example.

No that I know of.

The applied RWRP concept is relatively new. I don't remember it hearing about it earlier than mid '80s. However, I'm no guitar wiring historian, mind you...
