Well im going to try them, what do I have to loose ? So how about a few suggestions. Im thinking of a EVO or Tone Zone to get me a good tight aggressive tone of 80s and 90s METAL, Also thought about a Super D, Super 3 and a Breed, but so far the EVO is in the lead with the TZ in a close second. I allready have a Custom, JB, DD, C5, Deamon, and a Dime, I just want to try DiMarzio for myself.

Re: Gonna try DiMarzio ?

imo...the evo is compressed and colored while the tz is more open sounding......i think the superdistortion is the best pup from dimarzio and probably do the 80s/90s thing better from metal to hard rock to grunge....

Re: Gonna try DiMarzio ?

If i were gonna try some Dimarzio's tomorrow... i'd go with Evos, Vai gets such a good tone from them.

Re: Gonna try DiMarzio ?

Depends on the guitar you're using but for 80's tones on a Super-strat the Super3 is a great pickup.

I wasn't too keen on the Tone Zone though...to much bass IMO.

Well. well, well. Here's Mattt giving advice on a pup he's never owned.

Now what was Mattt saying about that sort of practice?

hmm yeah Vai's tone is pretty good, but look at his rig man, thats where his tone comes from not just the pup.
wel personally i think the super D is also the best choice for 80/90s metal for almost any axe IMO. good luck finding the tone u need soon.

well, well, well... somebody wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? play nice guys.

vai's tone is nice but he runs thru more gear than most of us have ever seen. the evo thru my gear sounded really bright and focused

Re: Gonna try DiMarzio ?

Super distortion is a great sounding pup, I had one in one of my guitars and it gives, well, that sound. My personal favorite is the Tone Zone. This is the pup that is the closest to what you get in both current versions of EVH's guitars (Wolfgang and Axis). Both will do the hard rock/metal thing well. I think you just need to try one and see if you like it.

Re: Gonna try DiMarzio ?

well, i have tried the evo and the tone zone. the evo is really good if you wnat to be heard, ALOT!! the tone zone sounded good also, but it was in a guitar that was mahogany and it just didn't work with it. i have tried the super distortion also, but just not in my guitars. it sounded good in the ace signature guitar. you may like the evo because it has a tight sound. and the TZ is more open.

You think so? To my ears his "tone" is pretty lifeless and flat. Kind of the same with Satch and all the rest of the Ibanez guys. Yeah, they all have a few tasty moments and they can play circles around anyone. But to me they all have what I call the "Ibanez sound:" A very synthesized, electronic tone that doesn't have much "organic" character.

That's one of the reasons I tend to like Duncan humbuckers a little more. They seem to have more of an unrefined, raw, organic quality. More attitude. Some DiMarzio single coils like the HS-2 & HS-3, on the other hand, are really nice.

Another fan of the Virtual PAF.

If you're more in the rock/grunge/metal style, I wouldn't pick them though. They can do hard stuff well, but they were made to rock on clean riffs.

I agree..Vai's tone is like Snapple ice tea compared to the taste of fresh brewed with freshed squeezed lemon....like say, Eric Johnson

Are you talking about Duncan Humbuckers over Dimarzio humbuckers??

HAILS MAN
i have played through the super distortion, Evolution, Paf pro, X2N, and anotehr one that i can´t remember.. ahahahah ah, steve´s special.
well i have plenty of lcips of them.. oif you wat, give e your email and i will send them to you
Tight sound, bassy, middy and highy=EVOLUTION
but the Paf pro is a great pup too.
not as tight as teh evo
evo is compressed.i never played through a tone zone.
you can try a X2N. it is a good pup too, high output.
and there´s the DROP SONIC TOO.
super distortion is tight too
ou must decide between super distortion and evolution
evolution is more heavy , compressed and colored, but the super distortion is hotter than the Evo and more crunchy.
you must play both to choose one of them

What an idiot.

Firstly, i said i'd try them because i admire Vai's tone. I didn't recommend them, nor did i say they sounded good.

Fcking prick.

Yeah, i think so... i loved his distorted rhythm tone in the intro to 'Erotic Nightmares', and i thought the lead tone in 'For the love of god' was awesome.

Then, i think 'Tender Surrender' and 'Blue Powder' tones are unbeatable, whilst i thought the tones in 'Black Forest' and 'Burning Rain' were very emotive.

Of course, i'm totally sure which used the Breed's and which used the Evos.

I know the Passion and Warfare stuff used Evos...

And i've seen a lot of live stuff from Vai using an Evo-loaded guitar playing the stuff mentioned above, all sounded good to me.

As for the other guys, i love Satriani's tone, esspecially more recently... like the 'Strange Beautiful Music' album. Rumours have it though that he's using Pearly Gates now... i've got one in the neck, i like it.

As for some other Ibanez guys... i also love Petrucci's tone, but get bored of Gilbert's.

I hear the Air Zone is awesome.

The AirZone with Air Norton in the neck is AWESOME. The Air Zone is like a reversed eq'd JB with works good with a bright guitar like a wolfgang. The Air Norton matches up very well with the Air Zone. Both are very FAT Paf sounding. This is the first humbucker set from DiMarzio that I actually like.
