i'm looking to purchase a bass head to go with my ampeg 4x10 sometime in the near future.

because of my pricerange, i'm obviously looking for used gear.

i'd really like to get something tube, but i don't know if i'll be able to find anything for the money i want to spend.

so i'm looking for any suggestions of a good bass head for around $400 (maybe a bit higher if necessary). i'm open to pretty much anything, so if you've got any suggestions i'd love to hear them.

my bass player just picked up a used SVT3-Pro head for $500...it's preamp tubes and solid state power. it sounds great....a great amp for the price

Carvin makes a fairly decent bass head, though I'm not sure on the price. And Peavey also makes a performance-worthy bass head.

4 ohms.

i'm leading toward ampeg (and if i can find a used svt-3 for $500 i'll lean even further), but i'm definitely open to anything. i'll check out the stuff that's been mentioned.

thanks!

I have a bassist/friend who's a tube amp diehard for bass. He likes the Mesa 400 and 400+. I think Les Claypool was using those in Primus too. My favorite is the giant block O steel, the Ampeg SVT-II, but I'd check out those Mesas, too.
