Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

I need help picking a bridge pickup for my maple equator. It's a fully hollow guitar. I just ordered a seth lover neck so somthing that blends well with it is very important. Have tried a 59b in this guitar and it was too weak. I have a custom in there now that is too honky and strong. So I'm needing something in between. My considerations in no particular order :
Brobucker
Wcr dark burst
Rio grande texas
Wolftone Marshallhead
Saturday night special
Duncan 78

**** I gotta throw in the 59/custom as well. That might just be the middle ground???

The logical choice: a Seth B.

No - that's the Blueman choice; Whatever Rick thinks regardless of what the OP says, wants or needs. "If a 59 isn't 'sporty' enough - that doesn't matter to me, you need [insert Rick's choice du jour here]"

I notice you appear to have been here not too long and not too often….

I can't speak to many of those - however; Have you heard of the 59/Custom Hybrid. More oomph than a 59, less honk than a Custom. It's one coil of each. Other choices might be a Custom 5 (no honk, more oomph than a 59). And….somewhat closer to the 59 but with a bit more spit might be the Whole Lotta Humbucker.

Brobucker probably a great choice for you too. You are really shopping in the 10k range IMO. DiMarzio really rules there….

LOL you just made me laugh. I definitely respect the knowledge you guys have. This is the whole reason I just pulled the trigger on the Seth as recommended here. I have to say that the 59/custom sounds promising. Because I do like what the both had to offer in this guitar. So the best of both worlds seems like a good middle ground.

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

wow, these Equators are mighty fine guitars. Since the are beast of its own, you have to consider the facts: Long scale, wooden bridge, 24 frets, glued in multiply neck.
my choice would be first to fool around with the given pups and a Alnico 8 magnet. Like 59b with A8 and the Custom 8.

If I had a dollar for every time you've tried to push PG's on someone...

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

since you have a 59b and a custom, id swap the magnet from the 59 into the custom to make a c5 and see what you think. little less output than the custom, no honk, more bottom and less aggressive mids

Better yet, make your own hybrid

You'd be broke because I only suggest them when they are the right answer to someone's tonal dilemma.

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

I like the A8 59 suggestion….

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

I ordered some a8's to try. So I'll give that a go.

But I have a question. Instead of starting a new thread I figured I would ask it here. I'm seriously considering the Saturday night special now for a few reasons.

1. As far as resistance goes it's right in the middle of the 59 and custom. (Which is what I'm after)

2. Even though it has few reviews right now, the little that I've read I liked. Darth Phineas discribed it as a more muscular Seth, and that is exactly what I want to match with the seth neck.

3. I like trying new things that aren't mainstream yet. I would love to contribute a review on the forum here as a gratitude for all the useful info I've obtained here over the years.

4. SD's description sounds like somthing I would want. And I enjoyed the YT demo.

5. A4's are my favorite magnet.

So my question is, does anyone know if the SNS is Potted or unpotted? I remember reading a member on the forum saying he almost bought one and discribed it being unpotted. I always thought it was potted? Is it?

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

'd pick the Whole Lotta Humbucker if you need something hotter. Possibly a bridge Saturday Night Special. My thought is that a 59/Custom (while one of my favs) is too hot for a hollowbody.

I Was thinking the same. Which is hotter the whole lotta or the SNS? They're probably very similar except for the mags right?

Re: Good bridge bucker for Seth N (maple hollowbody)

id assume the sns is a hotter pup but i havent seen one to know for sure

In the Duncan catalog, pretty much between the Seth and the WLH....erring more toward the Seth to my ears, hence that comparison. A "stronger Seth" seemed a little more intriguing than a "weaker WLH"

I have both. The WLH is a bit bolder, or maybe fuller. The SNS is a little more open and edgy.

A SNS neck and a WLH bridge might be a fun experiment.

Seeing that you own both, how would they compare if they both had a4's in them? How much of your above comparison in tone is influenced by their magnets?

Couldn't say, having never out A4s in the WLH.

I'm comparing them by the tone that comes out of them. The magnet is as much a part of that as the screw/slug alloy and type of wire and so on.

Probably not best to fixate too hard on the issue. No matter how people like to think its all about the pickups, there's also dozens of other elements at play as well...not least of all, those knobs on the front of the amp.
