Good cab for my JCM 800?

I just got the Marshall JCM 800 1982 2204 Canadian model, with optional 4 or 8 ohm's. I want my set up to sound good for hard rock

Few questions
1. I'm thinking of getting an Avatar, closed cab 2x12, loaded with one 16 Ohm Celestion Vintage 30 and one 16 Ohm G12H30, forming a 60W 8 Ohm cabinet. sound okay, pretty standard, missing anything?

2. Is it difficult to replace the grill? Know a good place to get a replacement grill as I'm looking at one right now that has a fender grill, which doesn't really match. What grill choice would you go with to match the Marshall head?

Thanks everybody

Well .... It depends I am not happy with my JCM900 with G1275Ts in it .... I agree that those speakers are ice picky in the highs and the bass is huge but flobby, many people say here that this is a great cab if you change the wiring to 10" gauge, some insulation, and replace the back particle panel with baltic birchwood and put in speakers that are more of your taste(in my case its something V30-esqe.) Now you can easily find them used in good condition for $500 or less. And then mod them like I've described .... is it worth it ? I dont know myself ...

Re: Good cab for my JCM 800?

I hear good things about the Avatar cabinets...I just bought a quad of Hellatones off them that I really like. Broken in G12h30's as you may know......I bought grillcloth HERE and recovered the face of my Marshall cabinets with "large check" Mmmmmm...............

Re: Good cab for my JCM 800?

How many times do I have to say it? Anyone looking at Avatar needs to give Earcandy serious consideration. I know the claims they make are steep, but they deliver. I retired a vintage Marshall 4x12 (1982b w/ original G12Hs) after taking delivery of my Buzzbomb this June. I know it's hard to believe with the rep Avatar has around here, but I've played both and it isn't even a real comparison. The Buzzbomb sounds better than any 2x12 I've heard and it puts most 4x12s to shame. If you want clips I have access to a JMP2203, JCM2555, and two Buzzbombs; one loaded with V30s the other with Eminence Private Jacks. Just let me know what you'd like to hear.

Re: Good cab for my JCM 800?

I've heard great things about the Avatar for an affordable cab. Let me throw the Splawn cab in there too, it sounds great with their standard X-pattern of Eminence or upgraded Celestions.

Oh yeah, your head has black cloth, right? Matching black is the way to go, I think. (Unless of course you want to redo the head too while you're at it...)

I have exactly what you're thinking of here but in their 4x12 vintage configuration. sounds killer. I also changed the grill cloth to the '62 reissue stuff so it kinda has a Zack Wylde kinda vibe (not that I was going for a Zack look) and I also added a Marshall logo. The changes were super easy to make, just some patience, a cordless drill/screwdriver, pliers, and a staple gun with lots of staples. I posted a pic of it on some other thread... let me know if you need any help on it if you decide to go that route.

Re: Good cab for my JCM 800?

i also have a Canadian issue 800 2204 in need of a better cab... right now i just use it thru a Marshall 1912 1x12 cab.... it's 8ohms.... kind of a pain the Canadian issue does not offer 16 ohm cabs....

i've been keeping my eyes open for an early 80's Canadian 800 4x12 that are 8 ohms.... i found a 2x12 800 once but the seller would not break up the head and combo and the head was a junky MG head... plus it was over priced....

Re: Good cab for my JCM 800?

Thanks everyone for the replys. Well the Splawn and Ear Candy cabs look very nice! I would prefer either to the avatar. I just passed up on the avatar cab, I described above for $250 used. I'm still not sure if I should have taken it or not. I would have had to drive 2.5 hours to go get it.

I want a really nice 2x12, I just also want to be picky and get the best deal(like everyone) for a really nice cab. Maybe I should just save up and go with ear candy or splawn. Hard to say which is better and don't know how I could try them with out driving several, hours.

Also, it's hard to say if I got an avatar and changed the back panel, added insulation, and changed to 10 wire. would be a better way to go.

Thanks for all the great replys, I think i'll just have to keep researching, but any more comments are very welcome!!!!!!!

Seriously thanks

sure.... mine is a real project as it has been baddly modded and teh vinyl was stripped off it by the last owner.. i picked it up cheap when i worked at a music store for a short time... i need to have the bad gain mod removed... sounds like an OD on in front of the amp all the time....

i have the real Marshall vinyl stuff to recover the head as well... i've been taking my sweet time working on it...

it sounds OK right now if i keep the gain under 6... turn the gain up any higher and the noise is too insane to use.... i want it pretty much stock or a local tech said he can make it into a great head if i allow him to remove the Gain mod and let him do an EQ mod... says the EQ section controlls will have a wider range with more lows and mids then stock...

Few questions:
1. Where do you find or where's the best place you know for baltic birchwood and 10" gauge wire?

2.How would you insulate it?

3. Can anyone find some old reviews besides on Harmony Central? or threads about these mods to the cabinets.

4. What do you guys think of the Alnico Golds? Are they the shizz nit? Worth that much?

Thanks Dr. M
