Good Coil Split Pups

Hey guys, I am thinking of swapping my Blackouts for a strong passive set that will coil split nicely. So far I am thinking a DD set, or at least a Distortion bridge with a '59 or the like in the neck. Opinions?

Clearly if I have Blackouts, you can tell the type of music I play :D

I'm looking for a little more variety in my tone, but I don't want to lose the heavy metal edge of the Blackouts. Thanks a lot!

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

duncan distortion, duncan custom, duncan custom5 and JB split great.

the prails too, ofcourse. I prefer the prails for actually everything, though with a ceramic magnet :)

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

If you play metal 90% of the time I don't really think it's worth the trouble.
Besides, the clean sound from the neck blackout is awesome - why bother with splitting coils on something else?

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

Honestly I can't afford to get another guitar, so I need a sorta "all in one" axe. The split coils would help me get that kinda sound, if you know what I mean. :p

No experience, but I've wondered about the Stag Mag for this. Has anyone tried it?

EDIT: never mind, kinda doubt you could do metal with it. Punk, otoh...

Yeah the DD sounds great split, so does the Invader, and the two together (inner coils) sounds totally different than either one. I've read that the Invader in parallel sounds good too.

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

The invader really sounds great split. Its cleans get down right teleish when split.

I don't think I've ever been happier with a pickup's versatility and tone in general than the P-rails though. Might be a bit big sounding for your tastes though.

Certainly isn't lacking output in humbucker mode, holy hell is that thing powerful.

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

just get a set of distortions, the neck distortion actualy sounds great and since they split well youd have exactly what you want.. hard rocking sound and a good usable split sound

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

I have a Custom5 in a strat and have a push pull pot to tap it and it splits very nicely. It isnt single coil spanky, but it provides a very pleasant and usable sound. Whereas some pickups Ive split have been thin and harsh..

Re: Good Coil Split Pups

i think as long as you don't get anything with a low combined resistance like <13k, you should be fine. personally i like the jb split.
