Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

hex morbidity

Ok, so first off i wanna say i have a crappy amp (Crate GX-15) and it literally produces one sound and that's about it, and its definitely not the sound I'm looking for. So my first question is would it even make a difference adding a/or pedal(s) or will it just be a waste of money. It seems like no matter what i do on the knobs i get the exact same sound. So then my second question is what pedal or pedals would u recommend for death metal, heavy metal, grind gore (not to be mistaken for grindcore), technical death metal... get the idea? I am willing to spend no more than $100 on a pedal. Maybe even getting 2 pedals and it still being under $100 would be awesome too. Any help is greatly appreciated, I am a novice with guitars/equipment, so pardon my ignorance.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Save the 100 bucks towards a better amp. You wont get much out of a GX-15. It lacks the headroom and speaker to really accept a good metal pedal. If your dead set on cheap chugga chugga find a used Boss MT2. It will sound like poop if you ever try to use it with a band but it might blow your skirt up playing in your bedroom.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

You can actually find a used BOSS MD-2 for around $50 it will help you EQ your Crate and it has a buttload of gain.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Dude get a better amp first. As far as uncomplicated practice amps go I really dig the Roland cubes

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I'll chime in on the amp.

Peavey Vypyr will do death metal. Either at least a 30W of the first generation, or 20W of the VIP series.

Edit - You could also get some decent tones from older solid state amps. The Crate GX130C, H&K Warp, Ibanez TBX150, Randall RG75, or Peavey XXL. All are available in combos, and if you shop hard enough you should be able to get any of those for under $200. They will all do death metal.

If you're set on a pedal, try to find a used AMT P-Drive or S-Drive.

Check out the digitech metal master, the DigiTech death metal, or the metal zone, all 3 can scoop that death metal sound well. All can be found fairly cheap.

Yeah, its almost like having a good amp/pedals is necessary to achieve the desired sound. I've taken all your recommendations in to account. With that said ill most likely buy a pedal one of you guys recommended with the help of YouTube videos. I'll then save up for a better amp in the future. I don't have the funds to spend $200+ as of right now. Thanks all for your help, you guys are awesome.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

That little Crate amp is actually not bad. I've played through one of those before and thought they didn't sound half bad. You can definitely get a death metal sound (you're talking high gain, right?) out of it with a pedal. People bash Crate amps but they're sometimes better than the major brands offerings IME.

And in reality there are very few amps that are gonna give you high gain by turning the knobs, you'll almost always need a pedal for that sound, imo. There are a ton of pedals you can use - Rocktron's overdrive pedal has insane amounts of gain, and you can buy them used cheaply. I have a Boss Super Feedbacker right now that can really throw out a lot of gain if needed. But there are MANY.

You dont need to spend a fortune on a pedal to get a certain sound. Btw I always buy used - eBay or CL, definitely much cheaper than buying new.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

Save up, buy a 6505 of some kind (the 1x12 combos are $400-ish?). Pedals don't really do death metal, the bands that used pedals to record albums did so because they didn't really have an alternative (bands were broke, studios didn't know how to properly record death metal).

Real answer: Purchase cheap used MT2 (GC's used section has these for 25 bucks). Get it modified/purchase mod kit and DIY. Later on, purchase a decent tube amp and use the modified MT2 as a boost.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

I agree - the amp is the real issue. As long as you are cool saying "Yes - this will NEVER sound great, but I'm ok with it sounding better for a bit by using a pedal." Then go for it.

Almost any pedal will be better.

Metalzone, Dethmetal, Metal Master….whatever. Just go used/cheap for the short term.

I dig my Metal Muff w/ Top Boost.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

If you get a used MT-2 Metalzone, you can always have it modded by Keeley https://robertkeeley.com/product/mt-2-metal-zone-mod/
Lot's of folks may rag on it and say it sounds like poop in a band situation, but I disagree. With the mod and a decent amp, it crushes.

...or you can put your big boy pants on and get an HM2. Come on in, the water's fine. Makes ya wanna burn a church.

Re: Good Death Metal/Heavy Metal pedal?

While saving for a Metal Amp (5150, and, and, and), a used Peavey Bandit gets my vote, to replace the OP's current amp.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PEAVEY-BAND...088?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f38af3100 - $135.00 BIN

imho, MUCH better than a pedal !

Get the silver stripe version:

and any overdrive pedal. You can probably get the amp for $100 if you shop hard locally, and a used Bad Monkey pedal can be had for $25.

That will do death metal.

And yes, get the Behringer HM-300 pedal when you get the chance, those are about $30. Turn the distortion off, turn the EQ knobs up most of the way, and put it in front of an already distorted amp, it'll give you the Swedish Death Metal tone without adding noise.
