alright, i use ernie ball 9-46 gauge strings on all of my axes. im gonna be getting another floyd rose equipped guitar in the future and i might use one for drop D tunings. i was thinking of using a 48 from an 11 set or some5thign like that.
would ti still balance well without me having to set it up for it?

Re: Good E string for drop D?

my 46 works fine...try it out.

Re: Good E string for drop D?

For D, I've used a 42, 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 56, 58, 60, and all have worked well enough.

Re: Good E string for drop D?

ok but i'd like it to be able to stay the same with my floyd without having to screw with the springs and all :D

Re: Good E string for drop D?

Get a set of D'Addario EXL140's, you won't regret it. It's got a .52 low E string which sounds magnificent. I use .46 for drop D tuning as well, but I feel heavier gauges feel and sound better

Re: Good E string for drop D?

I use a stainless steel set of Ernie Ball Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom. I routinely use a drop D tuning. The guages for said set are .010, .017, .030, .042 and .052. The .052 keeps its tuning nicely.

Re: Good E string for drop D?

What you use now will be fine... you'll just have to retune your other strings slightly.

It doesnt make much difference at all, I seriously doubt it would need re set up

Re: Good E string for drop D?

Another vote for EB Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms. A really solid set of strings. It was actually the first set of EB's I ever bought and I'm suprisingly satisfied. I've tuned them in at least 4 different tunings already, all the way from Drop C to Standard E and everything in between, and I'm happy with the performance and tone. Great bottom strings for bending and carrying tone.

Re: Good E string for drop D?

The E dropped to D in 9's sounds really great, but the .52 sounds huge tuned to D.
Because of the tension when you bend it you've gotta bend the crap out it, use a lot of attitude, so it sounds killer.

So, you may want to go hybrid. You can solo all you want yet still get those thick rhythm sounds.

Re: Good E string for drop D?

i may try a 52 for when i do drop tunings. big tone would be cool :D
crush the skulls of the first four rows would be nice too :D
