OK then.... What do you recommend? To be used for vocals and for placing away from the amp to capture some of that 'room' quality. I don't want to spend *that* much, but I do want quality. Under $150 is preferred, but under $200 is OK as long as it's worth it!

EDIT: I'll be buying used, so if something goes new for $300 but I can get it off ebay for $200, that still counts. :)

Thanks!

CAD studio pack @ Guitar Center. You get a large diaphragm condeser with variable patterns and a pair of unidirectional condensers for $199.99.

Re: Good large condensor mic

I don't consider anything under about $500.00 to be at a pro recording studio level but there are some good mics under 5. Take a look at the Studio Projects line, a lot of people use Rode I personally don't like them at all, also the MXL V69 Tube mic is pretty good for around 2.

Funny how people in professional studios use 57's, 421's, 81's studio projects and rode series mics and tons of other mics below 500! I could go on and on but just so you know the price doesn't determine what can and can't sound good. It also shouldn't determine what is "professional" in you're eyes.

Were talking large condensor mics not SM57. Perhaps we just work at different levels.

I don't care what type of mic we're talking about, I'm just saying under $500 doesn't mean anything. And there is no difference in level, I've worked with $1000+ mics just as much as I've worked with affordable ones. I just don't have a holier than thou attitude towards budget mics.

You're entitled to your opinion I don't share it.

Re: Good large condensor mic

why the heck are we fighting about smoething so stupid?

also, shure makes a condesor for 300 american (retail) that ive heard is pretty damn good. ive got a audio-technia 2020, yet to use it however (tomarro though)

Re: Good large condensor mic

The MXL V69ME is a nice mic for recording guitar--I've found it really nice for acoustic and great for micing an amp as well (I used it on a 10 watt no master amp cranked up for full distortion about three feet away).

I've found the MXL V63B is not that far off from the 69 and that is only about $70 new. A bit darker and duller, but still sounds good. I've also used the AKG C3000b which I wasn't too crazy about, and the C1000s small condensor which actually surprised me at well it turned out.

I mic up close with an SM57 but I'm changing that to a Sennheiser MD421 and e609 silver for rhythms and the 57 for solos.

For vocals I run the two MXL mics into different channels for stereo, but if I had to choose just one it would be the V69ME. Hope this helps out.

Re: Good large condensor mic

I've been listening to clips of various condensors from different sites, and I'm surprised how I almost always favoured the sound of the Studio Projects C1, only sometimes being beaten by mics costing three times as much. So that's going to be my choice. :)

Thanks a lot guys!

Re: Good large condensor mic

Carvin CM-87s($199) we just picked up one to record and they sound great for the money!!!

Re: Good large condensor mic

Don't spend $200 on some junk MIC condensor mic. It might sound "amazing" now but in six months or a year you'll dispise the hyped top end & 2-D sound.

Spend the $200 on something you'll actually use for a lifetime & get a "good" microphone like a used RE-20, Sennheiser 421, Shure SM7 or some other quality dynamic.
