Good match for a Nazgul that isn’t a Sentient

Need to put a neck pickup in a project 7 string that currently has a Nazgul in the bridge. I play mostly doom/death/thrash stuff, but like to have beautiful cleans to contrast the brutal gain stuff. I had a 59 in another guitar I liked, and have heard the Sentient plenty of times. Just looking for something different than what those two offer.

What do you define as 'beautiful cleans' and what don't you like about the Sentient?

Sorry, yeah that’s not a very good description on my part. Something with great clarity and an even EQ, where all the notes sing out.

It’s been a minute since I played thru a Sentient, but just remeber it feeling blah.

I hate neck pickups. Rarely need them, rarely ever use them...... That being said, the only neck pickup I've ever liked is the 59. If you know it works and how to use it, don't be afraid to use it in another guitar.

That's my humble 2 cents worth.

Well, a Jazz isn't an even EQ at all. You might actually dig the Black Winter neck.

Was going to post much the same thing. If you don't want a Sentient, and you're looking for something different from a '59 that can also keep up with the Nazgul, the BWN is a great choice. To me it is unique in Seymour's neck pickup line.

I had a 6-string BW bridge pup in my KM6 MkI for a hot minute and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It had this upper mid, ice pickey thing I couldn't seem to get rid of. Replaced it with an Elysian Trident II and never looked back. Does the neck pup have the same thing going on?

As for the Jazz EQ, looking at the EQ curves on this site, it doesn't look like any are flat at all, which is probably a good thing. I'd assume the emphasis on the high end adds to the clarity and airiness of a the pickup, correct?

I sat and listened to the sound bytes on the main page, bouncing back and forth between the Sentient, Black Winter and Full Shred. All three do sound good, but I think for where I'm going musically, the Black Winter definitely sounds the best - especially in the "band mix". Still on the struggle bus over not liking the BW bridge pup, however. But, I get this is a different animal chasing different prey.

The BW neck is very different from the BW bridge. It's got a lot of range, and gives you warm full-bodied cleans despite the high output. It responds well to tone knob adjustments and to splitting. But it can also handle all the filth you throw at it.

Found a good deal on a BW neck on the 'Verb last night. So, I'll see how that goes. If I don't like it, I can just resell it for what I paid and move onto the next. Have some friends telling me to try the Air Norton, so that or the Jazz might be next if the BWn doesn't get me there.

I was finally allowed to have the Black Winter Neck pup this morning (Christmas gift) and also got a neat little soldering stand as well, so figured I'd swap it into the guitar and see how it panned out.

As suggested above, it pairs very, very well with the Nazgul bridge pickup - so much so that I'm surprised this set isn't an offering from the guitar companies. They almost seem to have been meant to go together.

Volume across both is very well balanced, tone is complimentary between them and the BWn cleans up way, way better than the Nazgul (as to be expected). It sounds good both in a pristine clean to fuzzy brown settings and full-on Soldano gain modes.

In summary, if anyone wants to know about this combination of pickups, it's a definite thumbs up from me.

Thanks & Merry Christmas!
