Hey guys I've been looking to get a new amp or effect pedal to go with my new bad ass 7 string but I'm stuck on what I should get. I have a zoom g1on and it has all the delay/reverb/chorus I could ever want or need but now Im looking for something with a really nice distortion on it. I'm willing to get anot her amp as well if it's cheap enough!
Do yall got any suggestions?

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

For $200 you could get a used Marshall Valvestate combo. Make sure you get one of the older VS or 8000 series ones, not the AVT / 2000 ones.

Chuck Schuldiner of Death used a Valvestate amp, it'll do metal.

Bandit

Seriously
Bandits are great inexpensive amps

Used they are about $100
Take pedals well

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

Define 'cheap"..
Used 6505 combos are fairly reasonable. I see them in the $300-$350 range in Kentucky on Craigslist..
The Valve States like stated above are pretty good.
I just sold an Orange Micro Dark Terror and that thing was a metal beast and with the head and a 1x12 you would be out $400ish..

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

Are the marshall vs15/vs30R amps what your talking about?

Yes, but go bigger. VS65, or even VS265. Since it's a solid state amp, you can use it at low volumes, but the smaller VS amps don't have the preamp tube.

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

I don't really have the money for a stack unfortunately :/

I was recommending a combo as opposed to a stack, but If you search Guitar Center's used site they have a VS100 head for $120. You could probably find a used cabinet for $100 locally.

Damn I wish they were working Death is f**kin dope!
But yeah it looks like I'm going to the pawnshops lol wish me luck! Btw I'm bringing my stock ibanez s520ex as my test guitar for the amps since it has the weakest pups out of my whole collection (I have a few actives and a sd bw set)

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

Do you know what amp/pedals Chuck used for crystal mountain?

What generation of metal? For classic 70s-80s metal, I really like what you can get out of the Hardwire Valve Distortion pedal with a couple run-of-the-mill PAF-y pickups. It's flexible enough for nu-metal as well, but you might find it a bit too tame for harder styles like modern prog/hardcore/death metal unless you're getting plenty of help from the pickups and amp.

Well I just played a VS100 at my pawn shop and it sounded epic but they wanted too much for it and it was popping when I turned it up. I think I'm gonna go with something new just in case I don't like it I can return it

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

Yeah I'm definitely more of a heavy death metal guy if you have any suggestions

Might help to know what pickups you're running on this new axe, or its make and model if it's a stock production guitar. Obviously just about any seven will have higher-output pickups than your average PAF, so the Valve Dist pedal and a drop of compression might be plenty. Worth a try anyway.

Re: Good metal pedal/amp?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys but ultimately I went with the Randall Diavlo Rd5c. The only reasons I bought it over another randall was because of the whole floor space issue, and I wanted to try something full tube. I have 45 days tho to decide whether or not I like it. If this Randall isn't enough gain/distortion, idk what will give me what I'm looking for lol
