good metal pups for basswood?

Hello,

I just bought an Ibanez RG321 and I'd like to replace the stock pickups with a set of Duncans. This guitar has a basswood body, maple neck/rosewood fretboard, and a fixed Fender-style bridge.

I like to play metal in the vein of Megadeth, Testament, Iced Earth, etc. My amp is a Line 6 Spider II 1x12 combo.

Thanks

I had a Duncan Custom which was recommended to me from someone at Duncan years ago and it sounded great in my Ibanez RG-560. I split it and it got decent Strat type tones when I needed that too.

I just got an RG 1570 and I'm going to put a Dimebucker and a Distortion in it. I should have the Dime in about 2-3 weeks. We have similar music tastes. I'll let you know what I think.

JB,DD,custom sound good in basswood but you may want to think more about the guitar itself not just the wood it is made from?
I vote for one of the parallel axis pups for this guitar to give it the best tone.

Re: good metal pups for basswood?

I have a custom in a Basswood guitar, and I get good results with it.

The cleans aren't spectacular when wired as a full humbucker, but they are quite nice when you split it to an SC, so if you want cleans from it get a coil split switch wired/push pull pot whichever you prefer :)

With distortion it's pretty good, the pickup has quite full bass but it's very tight so no worries on the palm muting front. It has a decent voicing for high gain solo's also.

A Custom V, Screamin' Demon and a JB on the bridge would give you the sound you are looking for in a basswood body.

Personally though, I would go for a DiMarzio Breed on the Bridge and a Norton on the neck or a Breed Neck on the bridge or a Fred on the neck.

I like the Custom a lot for many different musical styles. Metal? It'll do it. Rock? Yep, it'll rock. Blues? Definately. Country? split it and combine it with your neck 'bucker and you can get real close.

As to what matches it well in the neck? My preferences are as follows:

1. Pearly Gates
2. Seth Lover model
3. Alnico II Pro 'bucker
4. Jazz
5. 59n

Distortion, JB, Custom or Invader. I have an RG570, and have had all these in it. Loved 'em all :D
Right now, the Custom is in it, and I like it more everytime I play it. I could be equally happy with any of them, though.
