i cant get my XXX to my dorm (its back home and my parents physically cant bring it here without hurting themselves), so whats a good combo like 30-50w for mostly metal stuff?

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

What happened to the V-Amp2? I know behringer makes a v-amp combo, and the Line6 Spider II's aren't bad. Isn't there a 40w XXX 1x12?

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

My buddy had a Triple X stack for awhile and sold all of it for the new Spyder II 2x10. He just had to downsize, kinda like what your having to do. The new ones are a huge improvement on the originals and sound great for metal. The 2x10 combo is actually pretty loud, we practice full band and it cuts through extremely well...and that's not cranked all the way up. They run pretty cheap too, you can get one from Musicians "Fiend" with free shipping for like 3something.

I like my 50W JCM800 and Rivera stack combo ....
Oh, you meant combo amp!!!! lol :D

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

consider getting a 2x12 cab. another way the problem is solved: cheaper and lighter.

i dig the v-amp, its fun as hell for recording or playing on your own, but theres dudes here that wanna jam and i cant cause i have no amp :smack: and yeah ive been strongly considering the spider II. the 30w one is only $200

my XXX is a 2x12 combo though. the problem is the speakers are chrome plated, and that pushes the weight to about 95 lbs, and my parents cant bring it cause my mom is....uh...my mom haha, and my dad has a really bad back. so im XXX is like stranded an hour and a half away. im a freshman so i cant have a car on campus either, so i cant go get it myself.

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

For me: Mesa F-20 / F-50, Hughes&Kettner Attax 80 or 120, used Mesa Mark IV, or a used JCM 800 single Channel 50w combo and a good landmine.

All can get decently close to my tone or even nail it at slightly lower (but still Band-ready) Volumes, and are versatile enough to do most other things as well ;)

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

i use a peavey 65w studio pro (12"), have tried both flextone II and Spider II...but i prefer the distortion i can get out of the studio pro. it´s real badass and it´s more into the peavey sound (although its a solid state combo instead of a tube combo like the triple X).

btw you can get also a peavey envoy (30W 10") or a bandit (100w into 4ohms or 80W into 8ohms).

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

a killer combo is the reverend hellhound. Just read the reviews on it. Very light and awesome small tube combo. There's even one on ebay right now.

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

Marshall DSL 201, if you can find one used

get those poweramp tubes sweating :)

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

hmm.....i put the v-amp in front of my sh!tty 13w practise amp, and it sounds pretty good. so i guess im fine with that till i need more volume

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

Just have your parents bring you home for the weekend and then bring it back with you when you come back.

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

a Vox Valvetronix AD60 head or combo. They work just like a Tonelab, can be used for rehearsing/gigs, headphone out, recording out, variable wattage down to a level that can sound good at whisper volumes. The head is $420 out the door at Sam Ash.
Tube amps are great, but unuseable at a dorm. The Vox has the best Rectifier tone in a small package. The clean models are nice, too.

Re: good mid-sized combo for metal?

on a related note i played a roland micro cube today and it kicked ass. really surprising tone for such a small amp. but anyway, i think the v-amp as a preamp is gonna work fine for now
