I like the SansAmp GT2. Check out the sound clips in the link provided.

Also, check out the clips on this page. The ones in the Marshall, Fender, and Mesa columns the GT-2 will get as well.

My Mesa V-Twin get's pretty brutal through my Bassman. :burnout:

Hey man, can I ask what your settings are and what the rest of your gear is? I can get some pretty ok tones out of my MT-2 through a Peavey Bandit!

Re: Good Modern Metal Distortion Pedal Suggestions needed

Ibanez Tube Screamer about does it for me through my baby Marshall.

Are you using the tube screamer if front of your marshall distortion? Or thru the clean? just wondering...

I have a Jackson DXMG loaded with EMGZW set going through an MT-2 to maybe a DOD EQ and then to a Crate GX120 100watts. To me the amp is ok. I don't know really as when i plug my Other guitar the Epiphone Fly V with the stock pickups. It really sounds much fuller in the sense much more warmth but it can get really muddy, then the Jackson DXMG with the EMGs it is really thin no matter how i tune the Metal Zone it tends to get a wall of white sound ..... think of it as pantera but you will get lot in the playing because of the lack of tone. I am thinking now that the EMGs might be the problem.

Does any one know hows the H&K WArp Factor or the Rocktron ZOmbie?

CHeers!

Not to be condescending, but, personally, I would save my money and upgrade the amp. A new pedal will only be a stopgap measure and, eventually, you will still be unsatisfied with your sound.

Clean.

It's just a Marshall G-series solid state combo so I don't expect to get the tone I get from my DSL100, but the tube screamer setting on my Boss ME-50 sounds pretty damn good when paired with the clean Marshall. Sounded alright when I tried it through my DSL too. Not as good, but still good.

As a rule, the Metal Zone is a crappy pedal that puts out some real grating, nasal-sounding distortion. It doesn't give you a metal sound. This guy who auditioned for the second guitarist slot in my band used one through a clean Fender Vibrolux. We haven't tried out any other guitarists since then (and I doubt we ever will).

The Metal Zone is most likely the problem here. Haven't heard anything about either one, but the bands you list (Killswitch Engage in particular) use distortion pedals (like the Maxon 808) as a volume boost rather than for distortion.

Also consider your amp. No matter how hard you try, a solid state combo will not sound like a fire-breathing tube amp. The best solution would be to save up your money for a true blue tube amp.

And while you're saving up for one, look into the G2D Morpheus. IMO it's the best high-gain pedal out there.

Re: Good Modern Metal Distortion Pedal Suggestions needed

If you're plugged into a a good tube amp with midgain, I'd buy a Banzai Fireball II. $200

If you want a small practice amp to sound like a wall of stacks, get a Radial Tonebone Hot British. $239, but find a used one cheaper.

I dunno man, Scott Ian and Dimebag Darrell have gotten some "fire-breathing" tones from solid-state Randalls. Come to think of it, so have the guys from Static-X and Rob Zombie...

I have the keeley modded metal zone and am very happy with it. It's a very pissed off sounding little box! The sansamp gt-2 is great as well and is really versatile. I have noticed that the gt-2 does tend to sound a bit harsh or ratty when used with hotter pup's like the JB or Invader and have to back off the guitar volume a bit. I generally use these pedals for direct recording through a behringer g-100 di box (killer 4x12 cab sim!). Then of course there is the Mesa... ;)

Re: Good Modern Metal Distortion Pedal Suggestions needed

another vote for the sansamp gt-2 pedal....try also the marshall jackhammer. that one is the best distortion pedal for the price, that´s for sure (50€...maybe 50$ in the states)

Re: Good Modern Metal Distortion Pedal Suggestions needed

Not modern distortion at all, but boss hm-2 can be great with the right settings.

True, but all of the bands he listed use tube amps and get a pretty distinctively "tube" sound (almost every one of those bands uses a Peavey 5150).

Although, Scott Ian and Dimebag did get some pretty awesome tone out of their Randalls. Can't say I ever liked Wayne Static's or Riggs' tone though. A little too much crunch and not enough balls for me. :nervous:

Re: Good Modern Metal Distortion Pedal Suggestions needed

i think what your problem is, all those bands use their amps distortion tones, so what your listening to is a cranked valve amp sound, which isnt easily reproduced with a pedal, killswitch use framus amps and the rest use peavey 5150's. your best bet is to get an overdrive pedal like a tubescreamer or more money friendly a Digitech bad monkey, or a marshall bluesbreakerII and use the volume boost so that you can drive the front of your amps own distortion channel. this should pretty much get you where you need to be, though dont expect to get the exact sound, even though i have a 5150 i cant get machineheads exact sound and i use the same amp, the idea is to get into the same ballpark of sounds as the bands you like.

Re: Good Modern Metal Distortion Pedal Suggestions needed

A Tube amp is nice but the country which is Dubai, United Arab Emirates i am staying in has no knowledge on how to fix maintain a tube amp. Any wayz tube amps are like a myth as everything here is Solid State. No idea whys that. Maybe the lack of bands and music. I could save up for a tube amp but shipping costs will KILL ME so ..... a pedal is like a deep in need for now.
